image.jpg Hey Ford guru’s. I’m just dropping my ‘62 260 heads on. Mercury manual says torque should be 65-70. Tom Monroe’s book says 65-72. No big deal there, but my Fel-Pro instructions say 80 on the bolts closest to the intake, and 70 on the outside ones, by the exhaust ports. This seems like a pretty big difference. Pictured is the Fel-Pro instructions.
So, follow the manual or Fel-Pro recommendations?
    Thanks

  2. The factory specifications were written for the OEM head gasket. The FelPro specifications were written for their head gasket. I would follow the FelPro specifications.

I seem to recall they had a change after they went to fuel injection (the intake bolt would pull the head up enough to cause gasket failure), and maybe the fix was to increase torque on the bolts on all the engines, instead of only the ones that needed it?

but it's been 30 years since I messed with this....

That’s what I was leaning towards, but me overthinking it I figured I’d get another opinion.
    Thanks!

On my recent SBF build, I did what Felpro said. Link to the break-in in my sloper build thread.

    IMG_0845.jpeg IMG_0848.jpeg Thanks guys.
I don’t do this everyday, but have put a few engines together in my life. I’ve never seen a head gasket this much larger than the actual bore size. I actually had to double and triple check the gasket numbers to make sure I had the correct gasket. :)
Anyway, heads installed, going to try getting the valve train and intake on tonight.

Those gaskets are for the 4 inch bore engines. They should work fine. Only way you would get smaller gaskets is to find nos Ford gaskets for the 260. At least you have them on right!!

Ha ha...I was checking the gasket orientation, too. I made that mistake on a 289 when I was 17 and I got to do the job over again. The internet was not much help in 1994 and I was learning the hard way.
