I have a 42 Chevy 1/2 ton pickup and when I got the truck it had two grills the one that was on the truck was in bad shape and the ribs were welded in place with molding around it and the other one is all one peace (stamped type), the reproduction one I see are welded, are ether one of these an orignal and what type was on these trucks, Thanks for the input
To my knowledge all lower grills were stamped from the factory. Even during the war years. I have had many of these trucks over the years and I don't remember any that where welded. I don't feel the one in the truck now is the original grill. This may have been pieced together from "beater grills". Some folks think that all war year trucks had no chrome, but early 42 models had chrome grills and bumpers. I have a 42 Suburban and it has chrome grills and bumper. Norm
The one on the truck looks original just rough. All grilles are 2 piece top half and bottom half screw together. Around the top of the bottom half you should find stainless trim pieces that go between the fenders and grill. They are a 3 piece set two corner pieces and one v piece .
I concur with Nev...the "welded" unit is probably an attempt to repair a damaged grille. As far as which one to use, don't get hung up on "proper", use the best one or the one that requires the least work to finish. Another tip....some repro uppers do not have "Chevrolet" stamped into the bottom bar.
thanks for the reply, the stamped one is the better of the two and the upper one has the Chevrolet logo on it all I need to find then is the three stainless trim peaces, thanks again Jim
The trim is not "necessary", although I think it liiks better with. If you DON'T run the trim, just braze fill the small rectangular holes on teh piece between the upper and lower sections, smooth and rechrome. OR....I have seen this transition piece painted body color, with chrome upper and lower sections. Just a thought........
Do you know where I can find the three piece stainless steel grille trim . I have a 1941 Chevy truck and I need the two corner pieces. I have the "V" shape piece but that's it. Also, does anyone know if they reproduce these pieces?. Thanks.
Is there any chance of a photo of the trim pieces. I suspect I may be needing them in the future and would like to see what I am missing.
Here is what a complete grille looks like with the "eyebrow" trim pieces over the upper corners of the lower grill.
Chevy of the 40's, Jim Carter, Filling Station, Ebay are just some of the companies that have the trim
