This is a 1930s photo of the intersection of La Brea Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard in Los Angeles, California. The alignment of Route 66 would be changed in 1936 to include Santa Monica Blvd., Santa Monica almost to the Santa Monica Pier (Fed. regulations required that a US Highway end at an intersection with another highway, in this case, US 101 Alt). But the pier makes for a much more satisfying end to the journey. This photo is courtesy of the Security Pacific National Bank Collection, Los Angeles Public Library .
