Hi I know this maybe a stupid question but here goes. ......I have a ford 9 in rear and the brake material ( shoes ) are 1 3/4 inch wide, the drum is 11-inch i.d., the surface where the shoes make contact is 2 inches wide. Am I correct in getting a 11'' x 2'' drum? I did search for a drum that is 1 3/4 '' wide with negative results. Thanks in advance Miller.

    11 by 1.3/4 brakes are
    ford
    bronco
    1969
    11'' brakes
    rear

those brake back plates are the only small bearing back plates that are 11''
I am reckonong its a carry over from earlier stuff, as you could get a 69 bronco with 10'' rear drums

The question comes more often than you would think and I did hundreds of brake jobs as a front end and brake mechanic in the 70's and 99.9 % of brake drums are about that much wider on the brake surface than the shoes that go with them. 1/4 wider gives you 1/8 clearance on the sides of the shoe.
There are a couple that the difference is a lot larger than that as they used narrower shoes with a drum that was about 2-1/2 inches and there is a lot of drum surface that the shoe doesn't touch on that one but that was a cost saver as a different application for the same car has wider shoes, = six cyl car vs big block car.

If you add wider shoes the wheel cylinder actuator rod will not be straight when the shoes are hitting the backing plate…..

Not saying a little wider shoe won’t work since one end is round in a concave socket of the cylinder but the other end slides in to the groove about 1/2” into the shoe and not room for much leeway.

Correct. A 1 3/4" wide shoe correctly fits a 2" wide drum. If you order a drum for an application using 1 3/4" shoes the supplied drum will be 2" wide.

IF you try and fit 2'' wide shoes 'thinking' it 'might' be an 'upgrade'
they will not sit in the upper pivot pin correctly

Back then there were a couple of different axle ratings for the Bronco. The higher load capacity axles likely got the bigger brakes, too.

I think it has more to do with the 'actual' flange offset, or how far the
wheel mounting face is out past the bearing
as you 'just' ***ume because it is small bearing that it share all the small bearing 2.5 flange offset
but it doesn't and its less
I am of the persuasion, that the shafts came from the pre 59 rear ends, or if you like the brakes are actually f100

So as an aside we have 2 1/4” shoes in a conglomeration of parts , but it seems we need 2 x 11” shoes for a 9” rear . What originally might have had 2” rear shoes.?
