Been UN-doing the puzzle to get the 3.03 out of my 1930 coupe and I got it all unbolted and went to slide it back but the Jeep topshifter is hung up on the floor- won't slide back at all. I figured I'd just extend the hole back a few inches and use a piece of flat stock to make a cover...just don't know how far back to cut....or if there's a better way to go about it. Thanks.
Take the top cover with the shifter off. Edit: looks like you could just drop the tail of the transmission? If not, maybe they put a bolt in cover around the shifter under the carpet. If not, cutting the floor may be the only choice. Either way, you’ll need to pull the carpet out to see what you have.
^^^^^. If there’s a removable plate under that insulation (can’t tell from the picture) so much the better. Either way, make sure that fancy new unit will go in, or do the cutting now to accommodate getting it in. You’ll need to clear most of the length of the input shaft, less what the angle is as you drop it out. A little measuring and imagination on the new unit should get you pretty close for the first cut.
Take the floor board out if it doesn't have a cover over the transmission. Those cars were just bolted together weren't thy?
I had a similar problem. There is a reason Ford had those removeable wood floorboards. I made mine out of sheet metal and the shifter hole was just too small for the transmission to move back far enough to take out. Swapped in a T5 instead. Lots more room to play with.
If it's just the shift lever, just take it out of the tower. You are going to need to the rear at least 8", but having 10" or 12" would not hurt if you are going to remodel the floor.
I was able to use a cutoff wheel to get about 3" or so out from behind it and it slid out nicely. I'll just cover it with a piece of aluminum, or something. Thanks! I was looking and feeling around but I couldn't locate any kind of removable panel.
