I'm looking for information from people that have used ( Summit, Kirker, Eastwood brand paints) . I"m going to paint my 62 Plymouth White, single stage paint is in my budget. Long ago (30 years ) i used Napa Centari Acrylic Enamel with good results. Would the newer Acrylic Urathane be close to the same type product ?
Some say Summit paint is fine..others say no way ! This car is of driver quality ( not a show car for sure). The only reason I ask about Summit paint is $110 a gallon. Painting whole car, jambs, engine bay etc. I can't / won't spend $1500-$2000 on paint materials. I'm open to other options. But at this point I don't think base coat clear coat is going to happen. And to be truthfull I think BCCC might look to shinny on this car.
, and strange with a white paint job.
Would the Acryllic Urathane have about the same durabilty as Acryllic Enamel ? This car is parked inside 99% of the time. Any input would be helpfull. Thanks

I have used paints from TCP (tcpglobal on Ebay) They have worked ok. I have used the urethane and clear coat. Both sprayed ok and held up well. I do the occasional flipper car. I have seen some a few years later and they look ok.

Urethane will outlast acrylic. Bc/cc is not that much harder to do or that much more expensive.

  4. I can only help with the type of paint, not the brand. I have used Acrylic Enamel in the early 90s, when it was banned here in Ca. I switched to Acrylic Urethane. Both where PPG brand but I loved the Urethane, the finished product was better with the same gun and technics. Urethane will out last enamel.

Last time I painted a car it was with white Nason acrylic enamel...about 5 years ago. I'm kind of traditional, and not too keen on urethane stuff, as it's just so modern.

But I expect you'd probably spend more if you bought the paint locally, that might or might not be worth the advantages of being able to talk to the folks who mix and sell the paint.

My experience is that paint will fade and chalk out in just a couple of years. Might last better if you add a hardener, I don’t know.

Never used TS paint but they do offer a hardener.

  9. I've used TCP Global many times, mostly acrylic enamel, but also acrylic urethane.
I found it to be decent, inexpensive, and as a bonus delivered to my door.
My cars are drivers, if I was into a "high end" type of finish, I would consider other brands.

  11. No one has mentioned it but be aware that urethane paints have isocyanates in them which are extremely dangerous to your health. Ideally you should be spraying them with a supplied air respirator but at a bare minimum you need a full face respirator and tyvek paint suit and need to change the cartridges often.
Lots may say you don't, as you always get those guys, but the reality is you do.

I used Summit's single stage urethane on my Ol Furd f100. Wimbledon white, along with a maroon called "Merlot" on the roof and wheels. I'm satisfied with it. I painted a panel at a time in my garage, to limit my exposure time. Masked up of course!
It sprayed fairly nice once I got the gun and the paint mix semi-dialed. It says no reducer is needed. But it is needed.
I'm no paint expert by any stretch, although I have done several completes in my time. From cheap synthetic enamel in the early 70s to lacquers, acrylic enamels, and then polyurethane such as Imron. The Summit urethane sprays about as well as the acrylics and polys. Not as easy as the synthetics and lacquers of old.
But, I too did not want to spend big money on paint that was better than my skill level, and especially for a daily driver that will see its share of nicks and scratches while being used as a truck. Summit's paint did the job nicely.

  14. I painted the firewall (white) and the frame(black)of my 39 with the TS paint with hardener in it. It has worked great is very tough and not faded one bit, thats been almost 5 years. I did drive it for over a year with no hood on it so the white firewall has def seen the sun. I like this stuff so much i plan on painting my 32 sedan with the Majic brand black, with hardener of course.

  15. Im actually a big fan of nason ful-thane urethane. Very user friendly and the more coats you put down the shinier it gets. And polishes nice on top of holding up well. What I used on my trunk lid and what I'll be using on the rest of the car. And as it's made to order you can have them add or omit metallic as needed IMG_2024-03-02-18-01-21-175.jpg

I used Kirker single stage urethane on a daily driver 1957 Plymouth. It was white and I had it for about 10 years and never garaged. It kept its gloss the whole time I had it. It was cheap at the time. I don't know what it would cost today.

I used the Eastwood single stage and I found it to be easy to use and was easy to wet sand and buff. The drivers fender and door have it in my avatar pic.

I'm shooting my truck with van sickle single stage implement paint (white) . Having to shoot it a bit at a time due to space constraints, cab is done, paint laid out nice, has gloss to it, was around 50 bucks a gallon plus hardener and seems ok. Can't speak to longevity obviously but it seems ok, there's a bunch of threads on the hamb where others have had decent results for a driver.

The Tractor paint fades and chips pretty easy, even with the hardener. I had stuff painted with it for years (the last one in 2019). Its good for about 5 years (sitting outside in the sun, if you wax it regularly), after about 4 years most of them starting to look pretty rough (the last truck was sold and I haven't gotten a good look at it in the last few years).

My coupe was painted in 2018 with acrylic enamel from O'Rilley's. With a wax job maybe once a year, there are places that are showing signs of fade on the red part of the car, but the white seems to be holding up pretty well. It does have some bug chips from highway usage. For the price, I'm OK with it.

My truck was painted in 2022 with acrylic urethane, also from O'Rilley's (both were the same brand of paint, but not what you are looking at). The urethane really has a lot more shine then the acrylic enamel had, with the same number of coats (all 3 painted by the same guy at the same place). The Urethane also has some bug chips from highway use (it got a 120 mile road trip the weekend after the paint job), This truck is driven year around, and has only been waxed a time or two, the paint still shines better then the coupe ever did, but it also sits inside. The urethane appears to be holding up a bit better for about $100 more cost, but it really was much more shiny. If that high shine is a concern, you may want to stick with the acrylic enamel. The coupe (acrylic enamel, 2018) and the truck acrylic urethane 2022). 20230406_123537.jpg

To my knowledge, urethane is suppose to hold up better than acrylic. Better uv protection, durability, etc. I've heard to some it's harder to spray? Don't know if it's in flash time or lay out, whatever. I've never noticed much of a difference. To each their own. You get what you pay for, cheapest isn't always the best.

  24. A quality reducer helps a lot.
Used shoopline (economy ppg) single stage. Didn’t lay down like I thought it should. Used PPGs higher line reducer and it layed down great

Nason or Transtar, are their two main ones in their paint and body catalog it seems. I dealt with both Sales Reps when I was managing, but that's been years ago. Last one was the newest regional rep for Nason though.

Yeah, true. I don't like to cheap out on the quality of product for the results. But I don't like to pay the highest for a product for my quality of skill/work. Economy lines work for certain things, and there's reason for the higher quality lines. For me I stick in the middle.

  27. With everyone bragging how bad tractor paint holds up, I might start using it.

takes way too long for higher quality paint to start looking cool

  28. Honestly the few times I used tractor paint I found that if laid on with multiple really thin coats and if you get the reducer ratio right it actually comes out alright
