    Hello,

The old panel trucks were definitely for commercial use in our early days into hot rods and drag racing. The back had so much room for all types of “stuff.” Some folks brought a complete motor tied in place for any replacement necessary for the big drag racing events. Those things that would not fit in a station wagon or enough room in a closed sedan delivery. Plus, leaving a covered motor in a motel parking lot overnight in a pickup truck is not the safest thing back then and definitely, not today.

There was a stigma attached to owning and driving a sedan delivery. Today, it is nothing except for being cool. But, no one wanted to be associated with folks delivering various items that arrived at your house from the local merchants. A family car used for cruising was labeled as “daddy’s car or mommy’s car…” that was bad enough, but to see the same delivery van roll up into the local teenage hangout was something.

My little 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery was my teenage car. I took all comments, derogatory or not with a whiff of air. I was onto something with plenty of coastal cruising, surf adventures, camping and a round of hot rod cruising with a friend. Teenage thick skin and adapting to the crud coming my way was the only way to go.

So, the old panel trucks had their moment. Deliveries for companies large and small were the main uses for the larger enclosed space trucks. There was a moment in the early 60s, when people thought of using them as camper vans, similar to the surf vans of that time period. They certainly had more room. But, for some reason, the real vans from the big three took over and flourished. So, the panel truck was still relegated to the delivery of stuff for various companies.

A custom, Skylight Vista Cruiser, a lowered rake ground scraper… privacy, yet stars at night...

    Note:
Yes, we have thought about having one created for our coastal camping cruises and longer vacations. The adjustable swiveling bucket seats would create an “office” with a view of the ocean, when the need arises. The back area would hold a nice refrigerator and couch turned into a platform bed for a couple of old folks to stretch our and sleep soundly. Privacy is built in place and insulation on the cave walls would keep the warmth inside.

My wife and I could go to the various beachside camping locations, powerup the long range wi-fi data plan and start reading or writing in our journals for posterity. I could even watch the waves and still write a nice post for the HAMB topics, too... Ha!

All while being in a nice custom Ford Panel Van hot rod. To keep those Ford folks happy, a Ford Predator engine with lots of horsepower + A/C and generator powerful enough to keep the lights on for a power supply for the night time beach activities. Plus, a set of double doors or a lift up tailgate to make sure the view out of the back opening is unobstructed for all things blue water and cool waves, experiences... YRMV

  20. Happy Friday all! Have a good weekend...

Well, the wheels don't disqualify it...
...even if it does only 'pull' with one horse power.

@Jeff Norwell , I was amazed at the number of older pieces you have dropped over on another channel. All of them are amazing. Thanks for putting them out there.
