hey guys, im gonna be pairing up my sbc with a 5-speed manual out of a mid 80's chevy s-10. will it bolt right on to the engine or will i have to get a different bell-housing for it. all input is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Shawn
search T5 and you will find everything you ned to know. Generally speaking though, that is probably a Non World Class T5 and not at all desireable behind anything over about 200 hp.
I have a T5 behind a 320 net horsepower 350. But this is in a very light car, that has anything but good traction at the moment. (soon the posi will be working). It's O.K. with it since 2 years. I don't think, that it will be good in a heavier car with the same power. I do not know if the trans from the S10 has the same bellhousing, as this probably wasn't on a V8. Mine is from a 80's Camaro. Good luck.
thanks for all the info, i forgot to mention that i have a posi track rear end with 411's, that shoudl equal everything up giving me a nice highway gear aswell as light to light. shawn
Upgrading to a beefier trans is the way to go, 'specially if you plan on impressing your buds by doing burn-outs after the swap, but the SBC and the S-10 T-5 will go together. The bell housing from a 2.8L V6 S-10 will not bolt to a small block Chevy (SBC). The good news is that the T5 trans from a S-10 (prior to the 93 model year) has the 'standard' manual trans bolt pattern used by GM for many years. If you get a bell housing, flywheel, and clutch pressure plate from a 60s 70s early 80s 1500 or 2500 full size Chevy/GMC pick-up truck with a SBC engine and a 3 or 4 speed manual trans, you can use those parts to bolt the 4.3L V6 to your existing transmission. I seem to recall that salvage yards call this a '609' bell housing, but not sure on that. You use the 11" clutch disc from a mid-80s Astro van equipped with a 4.3L engine and T5 trans, NAPA part RCF 4212. The bell housing from a 83 or later V8 Camaro or F'Bird does NOT work since they are drilled to tip the trans on its side toward the driver, you need a bell drilled to mount the trans straight up. That is all I think I know. Piper106
thanks for the info piper106, it helped out alot. I think i'll put the 5-speed s10 to the test and see what it can take, i can always upgrade later. shawn
I've got a line on a 2.8L truck with 5 speed. It is an older model, still squared off. I'm looking at putting it behind a stock 327. I'm working on collecting the parts listed by Piper106. Is this an OK trans to use or is there a better one on the 4.3L truck?
