Projects 32 5W Build - The $4K Swapmeet Body

  1. Those catalog pages are great! I have the “stylist” panel in my ‘34. I’d always heard it referred to as a “Hollywood” panel? Don’t believe everything you read on the internet I guess?!:)

    Worked on the interior this weekend. Got the rear window gutter installed as well as some of the metal bracing that ties the wood together. Got the seat pan and original seat slides installed. Made up floor boards and started messing with seat position. Being 6'2", I need the seat pushed back, almost all the way towards the rear window. I also installed the pedaks with the 49-51 Ford pedal pads and mocked of the Shoebox accelerator pedal. I threw in the old interior panels i got from Flip. I'm digging the old interior vibe and think its all going to work out well

    That interior looks great! I have never considered using later pedals pads, but it makes sense with the rest of the dash. You are marching along well!

    I bought a pair of Rotoshim front shocks. I just got them and am really impressed with the quality. I am getting ready to send more parts off for chrome, so mocked up the shocks to get the arms aligned. They took a little bending to make the shorty links line up. I think Ford designed 32 shock arms based on the narrower Model A shock, because they all seem to need to be bent in 1/4" to line up with the axle. I've found this to be true on both front and rear.

    Anyway, a quick heat and bend takes care of it.

    Those shocks really look the goods, are they valved differently for a V8 over a banger?

    Looking at the shocks I assume they are the polished version? Interior looks good.

    Yes, the shocks are polished, rather than the usual black anodize. And the interior is temporary, but should get me by for a while.

    Started stripping the body today. Got the driver's side done. 320 on a DA and 2" scotchbrite rolocs for the details. About 2 hours for the one side, so not bad.

    Never seen an adjustable drag link, what changed that required it?

    Any suspension changes, like reverse eye spring or dropped axle changes the draglink length, requiring an adjustable one to center up the steering box

    Thanks! Do you add one adjustable end to an original drag link or all new stuff?

    Two adjustable ends, so it's basically a shortened tierod. Some of the original Ford tierods are hollow, so I just used new solid round to make up the draglink.

    Also got the heads and intake back from the polisher. I am working on colors, tyring to nail down an accent color for the engine, firewall and random chassis parts.

    The polisher got a little heavy into the head nut faces, so I had to spot face them to get a clean torque surface. Quick job, but another step I didn't anticipate. But I got to buy another tool (spot facing set), so that's always good...haha. I used a 1" spotface with a 15/32" pilot. The pilot had to be ordered separate, as the pilots in the set were by 1/16"

    Nice work! That "spot facing set" is also referred to as a counter bore set. They are used to set the heads of Allen head cap screws below the surface of any project you are using them on. 60 Special

    So I gathered all the old chrome for what I thought was just about everything on the engine and chassis. Now I am spending 5x as much as that old chrome cost filling in all the blank spots.

    But I must finish what I have started...and it's a slippery slope.

    In this quest, I have pieced together another full chrome dropped axle 32 front end. I need to leave it at that and not get carried away on the next build...and just paint the rest!
