Fabricated, trimmed and welded 100% on his own.

You remind me of my shop teacher in middle school. As young whipper snappers ,we knew he had mucho experience as a tin knocker and drove Stock cars in his spare time. We looked up to him and to this day appreciate all he did to inspire us. There are teachers and there are teachers that never fade our minds and lives. You sir are one of those. Your students are very lucky to have you.

 

I’m the lucky one.
Spent the day with a group for competition. Not our particular trade skill contest for paint/bodywork (that’s in April) but what is called leadership skills. One preformed a plastic weld for judges and 2 presented a class project. Kinda like a science fair. About 15 from our school attended.
So you get to watch shy, nervous students interact professionally in a somewhat pressured environment. Each had to dress for the occupation or wear professional attire. Proper work clothing for those performing a skill, button shirt, tie, black slacks and jacket for the professional competitions. So no t-shirts, jeans, sneakers or hoodies.
I had 3 place 3rd. I’ll have at least 3 at state.

 

That is awesome.

Long Beach Community College Pacific Coast Campus on the Pacific Coast Highway in Long Beach

@anthony myrick Your contribution to the teenagers plus beyond is outstanding. You have provided them with alternatives and given them an outlet for their skills. Kudos!

Back in our high school hot rod days, one of our friend’s dad owned a huge furniture store across the street from the lonely college off-campus set of buildings and classrooms on PCH. We knew if we stayed with the automotives and welding curriculum, the classes were held at this location across PCH. Our high school campus was only a few blocks from this location. It was very close to the old Hamilton Bowl area that for many years, the Model T Club of Long Beach had their Annual Swap Meet that packed the location.

The Junior College main campus was located several miles away near the old Veterans Stadium where most here, know of car shows and a huge parking lot for parts swap meets. (Old and current times) It is also near the Douglas Aircraft buildings and the Long Beach Airport. So, it was to follow everyone else that did not go away to college and go to the far away campus for general education. Or with the hopes of going to a big 4 year college or, continue with the automotives program+ welding classes for me and a couple of friends. The high school counselor did give us the particulars about one or the other choices.

Of the ones who left our area and went away to school, that was beyond our means. But, for those that needed to go to the general education lower division curriculum that will be accepted to any 4 year college, anywhere in the USA is/was a route to a goal. The LBCC main campus was fine for the majority of our high school and for the other 3 high school area kids from the 4 separate areas of Long Beach.

We visited the smaller automotives classes and were impressed that they had more stuff than we did at the high school campus. But, we selected the main campus to continue our first two years of college. The cost, minimal and the classes would all be transferred to any upper level college campus anywhere in the USA.

So, what became of the small campus on PCH? It has remained the center of all automotive education for the local Long Beach area kids and 20 something folks. Even into the adult education offshoot was nice for some. Despite the closures of automotives and welding in the majority of high school campus curriculum, Long Beach still has some shops left.

“Anyone with a Long Beach City College “Pacific Coast Campus” T-shirt could have a collector’s item on their hands.”

“The college’s board of trustees voted 4-1 Wednesday to change its name to the LBCC Trade Tech and Community Learning Campus. The former Pacific Coast Campus at Pacific Coast Highway and Orange Avenue opened in 1949 and hosts many of LBCC’s trade courses like automotive repair, welding and construction courses.”

Still happening all these years later… since 1949… Our era 1956-64…

I’m not a big chrome 5 spoke fan unless it’s a Crager or Supremes

 

Guy dropped off this parts truck Wednesday. We’re going to use a couple small pieces for his truck. We’re going to use the roof for another project. A student wanted the 250 and he needs the bell housing because he stripped the threads in his from changing multiple transmissions.
Told the student he could have the engine and bell if he pulls it today during class.
They had it out in about 1/2 an hour.
