I found some older photos of the Black Scorpion Dragster, from the CHRR at FAMOSO back in 2003.

Hello,

The Thurmond brothers were a hot combo of a modified roadster in So Cal drag racing circles. The powerful Hemi motor, the lightweight chassis created a competitor across the starting lane that would give anyone shivers or second thoughts of sorts… The added hood gives an option for faster speeds if necessary for distance runs with different gearing at El Mirage and Bonneville. The added hood enclosure, would even help in the short quarter mile blasts, too.

Thurmond Brothers sponsored by Reath Automotive in East Long Beach (then Signal Hill, near Bixby Knolls) and also, Mickey Thompson’s Shop in the Westside of Long Beach.

The bright red modified roadster was simple in execution, big 671 supercharged motor took over and many races won. The extra added compartment in the rear added to the shape, but also added to the necessary stopping power after the quarter mile run was finished. For some, that big sandpile at the extreme end of the dragstrip and the chain link barrier seems far away. But, with a short lapse in concentration or the happiness in winning the elimination race, a split second move the race car closer to the extreme end.

So, a necessary parachute just gives the added stopping power. YRMV
