40FORDPU The canister. is just what you said, a extra supply of vacuum for wipers and top. Supply from the side of intake towards the back with line to a T inside firewall with one line to wipers one as supply line to switch for top. The switch has two ports on one side that I believe would go to the hard lines. The hard lines are broke off at the front edge of the seat. I'll and this project to the list. Thank you sir for the help and info.

Redid the body ground and frame ground with new cables and cleaning. While I was at it I replaced the Pos. cables as well. Cleaned the battery tray and refinished with a coat of black with new hold down. Pulled the radiator and could see more than a couple solder repairs. Took it to the shop and he poked at it a little bit and decided a recore or new would probably be best. Purchased a new 3 row Champion, got installed and looks pretty good. Rewired the headlight cross over while I had the radiator out. Very brittle with lots of bare spots, surprised they worked. Still digging on some of the car history and I better post some pictures later or this never happened.

  3. Will this ride be ready for the HR100?
I'm looking forward to seeing it sometime, down the road.

Cut some sheet metal and made a air dam from top of grill to radiator. As long as I had to wait for the paint to dry I figured I would spend the rest of the afternoon making the first cut on the old paint on the front clip. The paint seems thin to me on this car, or maybe it's just old. Seems like it stained really easy. Pulled the front hubs and drums to inspect brakes. The guy must have done some major work on this car just before he passed. Drums like new along with the lining and master cylinders. Two different hubs though as left side had a screw on grease cap while right side had push in. Witch is original I don't know. Pulled the back off and same thing there, already done. You could also tell he had the springs out front and rear and redid them. Started to work on the taillights till I dropped the left lens... I'm done. IMG_0004.JPG

I got the electric fuel pump mounted and wired with switch and relay. Ran new fuel lines up the frame rail to regulator and carb. Set fuel pressure at 2 1/2lbs. Decided to get started on the brakes next. The wheel cylinders were new so I pulled the m/c. There was no fluid in the m/c but plenty of rust and gunk. Went to a place in Minneapolis that specializes in brake parts old and new. Surprisingly had a new Raybestos m/c on the shelf. Bench bled and installed and onto bleeding. Got all the old fluid pumped thru the system and now getting good pedal. A little more bleeding and I think we'll be good. Got a hold of some 15in wheels at an old yard two towns down. Mounted up a 205/75 for the front and put it on. Fills the wheel well nicely with good turning clearance and still have room to lower it if I feel the need. I'm thinking 205's on the front and 235/75 on the back. I'll get rollers mounted and take some pix. If anybody is interested

  12. Carsons are the deal, I've built 2, one for my tub and one for my 51 Merc. They take time to make the frame, headder wood and 1 in channel for the sides and 3/8 rod or square tubing for the for the arched cross pieces, wood on the last cross piece to attach the rear top and window. Skin it with sheet aluminum and take it to the upholsterer. [IMG]

Got a hold of a pair of Wheelsmith 7x15's w/4in o.s. from my brother. Mounted a old pair of 255/70's on the rims and put them on to see. Filled the wheel well up pretty good. Back side clearance was good even at the shackle. Back edge of wheel well was good, but the front was too tight.

Dug up an old 205/75 roller and mounted it up for the front. Rim is a stock original pu wheel, 5.5x15 with a 3.75 o.s. Plenty of clearance inside and out with the 205's. I'm thinking 235/75's in the rear with the 205's in front. My plan is if I decide to later on go with 2in lowering shackles front and back I will be good on tires. But I do know how plans go. Three of the new tires showed up so I painted the wheels and mounted them up. Finished up the brakes and got the clutch linkage freed up and adj. Getting close on free play adj. I'm trying to get turn signals installed but the wiring to the back is a real mess. Maybe take a few notes and start rippin. IMG_0015.JPG IMG_0016.JPG IMG_0017.JPG IMG_0018.JPG IMG_0014.JPG

Ripped out all the wiring for the front parking lights, taillight and license plate light. I then hung the turn signal switch, flasher and went to town. Strung wires front to back, left to right and even up and down. Pulled the headlight buckets out and cleaned all the sockets and plug ins. Went to the back and pulled the taillight buckets and replaced with new. Did some more wiring and now have turn signals, brake lights and taillights. I wired in the front parking lights as front turn signals for now. Went to work on the vacuum asst top next. The lines from the switch to the front edge of the seat were gone. Ran new lines under the mats and now it all seems to work fine. You just have to remember that this is just an assist and not an electric top.

Went for a test run. Ran ok up to about half throttle. If you mashed it, it would bog out. If you tried running at more than half throttle it started sputtering and stammering, cutting out. Headed for home and checked fuel filter and it was full of rust along with carb. I should have known better. Once I got the tank out, I could see why I had a problem. So, I started at the back and went to the front replacing everything. Now I'm just waiting on new sending unit. They do not tell you that the stock sender does not fit their tank. You have to buy their 6V/12V sender.

    Out with the old...

Got the new tank, line, regulator and carb installed and now she runs great. Got the power washer out and cleaned things up under the hood and everyplace else I could get at. Used Dawn and 303 on the top and got thar cleaned and did a final buff on the paint. Put a coat of wax on while I still had paint left and cleaned the whole car. Took it for a 40-mile spin Thursday night and everything went well. This thing is really comfortable and fun to drive. Handles and rides great for 1940 engineering. I am still thinking about lowering it a little or getting some rake to it. Here is some picture from Thursday.

    Hello,

Nice work on that cool Ford convertible. I am not going to show my wife your photos. She is in a state of “convertibles” for a long time, ever since her childhood days in riding around with her mom in the mom’s 47 Buick convertible. Her favorite drive was from hot inland Pacoima in So Cal to Manhattan beach along the coastline, just south of the LAX complex.

The reason for not showing your convertible is that despite having our final car purchases, she keeps an eye open for a convertible or two. The first photos she took of some hot rods was at a mini car show in an old home/historic area showcasing some old restored/remodeled homes. This is where she took photos and sent them to me. I was shocked as I knew she wanted to buy that grey Ford convertible. Luckily, for our bank accounts, the convertible was not for sale. She had the checkbook out and ready...

Her camera skills are impressive… But, before the pandemic, we also saw a Candy Apple Buick Skylark convertible with those classy wire wheels. A convertible is/was still stuck in her mind. Again, luckily our checkbook stayed the same low balance as usual. Ha!

    Jnaki

So, although she does not favor lowered cars, the grey Ford Convertible was lowered and the tires filled out the wheel openings quite well. It still preserved the original convertible look and now, had better tires for modern road trips.

Have fun with your convertible. We all like a lowered rake, if anything, it gives any car an attitude that is a little different than stock. YRMV

Started work again on the 40. At the end of the summer the clutch was about a goner. I adjusted it all the way out till I had no adjustment left and still had nothing but free play. Pulled the tranny, clutch, pressure plate, and clutch/brake pedal assembly. Bushings, shafts and everything else is worn out.

    IMG_6062.jpg

Ordered new parts and while I was waiting for the little brown truck, I cleaned 84 years dirt and grease off everything getting it ready to rebuild.

I’m not sure how I missed the last 2 pages of your posting for so long Dan but I found it today and you have done a great job getting your 40 to this point. Congratulations on “staying the course “
