I have a 64 Cyclone tach that's in great shape but for the decal on the front screen. Not quite sure how to remove the screen without doing any damage to the functioning components. Does anyone have a diagram or experience in repairing or disassembly of the Falcon Sprint or 64 Mercury Cyclone tachs? Thanks in advance!
I have not tried to remove the face from one of my tachs but you might want to contact the manufacturer Faria for help. https://fariabeede.com/2-pages/home.php The main reason for the issue is heat from the light bulb inside the housing, I would suggest you swap it for an LED.
Thanks for the reply and for the link. I contacted Faria and their response was they do not recommend disassembly and they do not supply parts. Not really very helpful....
Maybe a long shot but ...https://www.phidonrestorations.com/services.php ..says he restores Faria style tachs
I've refurbished a few instruments over the years but not one of those. It's likely there will be a few tabs on the chrome bezel you'll need to bend straight and then the bezel and glass will come out. The adjuster screw will probably fit into a slot in the mechanism and come out with thr glass. Remember it's orientation to the mechanism. You must pull the glass and adjuster straight out dont twist it in relation to the internals or you'll damage the adjuster coil. Like I said I've not done one of those so I could be wrong, according to the Ms it does happen!
I recently purchased a vintage SW speedo, and wanted to remove the glass as well to clean it up. Seems the bezel chrome ring is rolled over onto the main housing and as suggested, the only way to open it up is to somehow bend up the rolled edge. Mine functions, and the “used/vintage” look will work for me. If you want it fixed, I recall finding several restoration shops years ago when looking for one to have a look at my tach. Still not there yet though. I also recently watched an episode of Jay Leon’s garage, where they had the owner of a 62 Olds Starfire. He said they had made a special tool to open up one of vacuum pots or something for the wastegate in order to replace the seal. Same deal. There was a rolled edge and they open it up to replace the seal, and had made a tool to roll it back in. So it can be done, and imagine that theirs would have to be airtight as well.
I don't repair electronic tach's but generally you do pry the bezel rim back until you can remove the can.
