went out to start my 60 chevy belair this morning ....put the key in and turned and ...nothing.....i`m getting power ok but just no starting....any ideas? monkey
nothing? no noise at all? not even a click? bad solenoid , broken wire , bad igntion switch ,bad ground do you have a mulimeter or test light?
no....nothing.....the puzzling part is it started no problem on thursday.....i have got a multimeter monkey
is it an automatic? is it in park? clean the battery terminals, then if it still doesn't work, whack the bottom of the starter with a hammer a few times, and if it starts then you probably need to replace or rebuild the starter. If it still doesn't start then chase the purple wire to make sure it's getting power when you turn the key to "start"
do you have headlights/ radio/ wipers etc? any battery power at all? if you have nothing..then it is probabilly the battery /battery cables ground if you have evrything working but the start function...then i would check with the multmeter at the ingntion seitch to see if it has 12 volt postive battery power at the terminal marked battery. then check if there is 12 volts at the terminal marked start when the key is in the start position. then check to see if there is 12 volts at the solenoid in the start position...the terminal on the solenoid is the INSIDE one . if you get 12 volts positive there it must be your solenoid
hey , yeah..it it's an automatic , it may be the neutal safety switch i have no idea where that is on a `60 chevy
cheers for the replies guys......its a manual......i`ll go and give it a whack in the morning....its pitch black out there now monkey
went out and tapped the starter motor ....no luck......when i turn the key i`m getting power as the Gen/oil light comes on as norm, but a full turn does nothing monkey
i`ll give it a good charge in the morning......i haven`t driven it in the last 2 weeks at all....just starting it every now and then..... monkey
Has it got an alternator or a dynamo? Just starting a car takes an awful lot out of the battery if it isn't run enough to recharge it afterwards. The cooler weather ain't gonna help either. Let us know how you get on.
its an alternator........a couple of weeks ago, i hadn`t started it for a while and it was turning over but not firing.....stopped for a few minutes , tried again and it did this....left it for 5 minutes and tried again and it turned over and eventually started monkey
ok....this morning i went out with the multi-meter.....first off i checked the voltage of the battery and it read just over 12 volts.....checked backwards making sure 12 volts was getting all the way up to the ignition switch which it was....also to the solenoid.....everything checked out OK.....now this is where it gets a bit puzzling......i took artikis advice about the battery and even though it read 12 volts i put it on charge....left it 5 minutes and turned the key.....it clicked.....which must mean its now getting power to the starter.....why would the battery show on the meter that its fully charged but in reality not be....oh i`ve got 2 multi-meters and i checked it on both......i`ll leave it charging for a few hours and report back monkey
although its a "12V" battery a battery with a full charge will read 12.6V with out any load. if it is reading a lil just a lil over 12 its posible to be only 1/4 charged
it was reading approx. 12.5.....its turning over now so i`ll leave it charging now for a few hours.......a new battery might be on the cards here monkey
pull the cables off and clean the post and cable ends then put them back on so you have good contact too.
Check and see what the battery voltage drop is with a load onit from the starter. It does sound like a dead cell in the battery. I've teasted batteries this way and seen a drop tp abput 6 volts while cranking. Had to replace thae battery. jerry
on the ****** this is a big problem for military and construction equipment because the wires come off really easily then once its off it stays off took me three days to find out one was unplugged one time but ill never forget it now
It does sound like the battery, Tim. As mentioned, the mulitmeter isn't any good for checking a battery. You need a drop tester for that. Can you take the battery off and get it to a garage that could test it for you?

I looked it over, a little charge and click went to crank? Good. As far as the post "it spun over but did not spark, later it did" sounds like you have two problems or more.

Easy way to fix'em all. If your handy and have pumped the pedal a few times tooo many pull the plugs, make sure theyre not wet. Crank it over, see if they clearly spark. See if plug condition indicates spark has been on it's way out. Plugs out engine starter should crank freely. Watch your multi meter when cranking does voltage drop to zero when "clicking". Battery may not be 100 percent. If battery does not dip at all you'll be cleaning connections.

thanks for all the relpies guys....darren and all the battery guys you were right..its the battery, just been and had it tested......changed it now so fingers crossed monkey
