Starting on a somewhat OT truck and looking at sound deadeners. Found this product, Soundproofing Materials - Mass loaded vinyl MLV - Green Glue - Acoustimac.com So, have any of you builders used this stuff? Price doesn't look too bad.
It looks like it is intended for soundproofing a room. Either somone, music practice room or the hearing test room in a hearing speciaty office = the room they stick you in to listen for the beeps in the headphones to test your hearing after you were around open headers for years. Amazon show a 4x25 roll of the 1/16 inch 1/2 lb per sf for 110 https://www.amazon.com/Acoustimac-Mass-Loaded-Vinyl-5lb/dp/B0C1ZZ31HY Doing some homework shows that the mass loaded vinyl is popular for car installations though. I'm still studying on what I want in my 48 but I want to cut noise and heat down as we have several trips planned that are 2K one way and up.
...not like hot-rodders haven't found 'other' uses for commercial products before. To my eye it looks like it could be useful, hence the question.
Looks like it is a barrier layer that goes between hard/strucural surfaces, not an outer surface to mount upholstery or dampen a single panel layer. May be worth a try though
It looks a lot like a product called Armaflex. Same stuff used to insulate air conditioning pipes. My wife die cuts that stuff for several different industries. I used this product on my V8 Corvair floors and engine compartments. Used a very hi tac spray glue ( 3M ) . In my application, it works like a dream . WHAT IS ARMAFLEX . Armaflex® pipe insulation is manufactured from a CFC free, closed cell, nitrile rubber foam. Designed to provide insulation for pipework, ducting and vessels, the low thermal conductive properties of the product help to reduce energy consumption and the risk of pipework corrosion.
I have. It's what they put in the high end $100K and up cars. They use it in sound studios as well. I sprayed mine with Raptor bed liner, then Fat Mat, then synthetic jute, and lastly I used the mass loaded vinyl. I split mine and would glue it back together with a doubler made out of the same material. You can see a little bit about it here. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/the-mild-custom-transformation-mamas-55.1119265/
Root, I just finished reading through 11 pages of your 55 project...damn, what didn't you touch? How is the interior noise today?
The car is sort of on the back burner. We have a ton of stuff that has happened. We are in the middle of a house build and a shop build. I figure we can get back on it in a year or so. Long way to say....I dunno yet.
