Technical French flat cooling system question

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by HaroldDegand, Apr 2, 2024.

  1. Hello.

I’m working on the cooling system of my 1932 Ford french flat powered and I have some questions.

The aluminium water outlets on the heads don’t have thermostat inside. Originally, both 2.28 diameter necks are drilled and threaded for a temp switch. The thermostat is located above. I’d like to replace those switches by temperature sending units.

Only the left side french head accept a temp sending unit, and I don’t want to remove the other one for drilling it, I’d like to fit smaller necks to match with radiator inlets but with the same principe.
And obviously, the thermostat will be fitted on top instead inside.
But I don’t find a 1.75 neck with a hole for the sender.

So, this could be the solution. Here a neck spacer for Mopar.

    Any other idea ?

I use 8BA type thermostat housings and put the temp sender in the tapped hole near the centre of the heads. The outlets are 1-1/4" so some hose adaption is required.

  5. Thanks Mart. I saw your video about french heads for Richard’s F1 when you posted it.
Same thing for me, no hole in the right head.
