It’s when they remove the center of the wheel and flip it over in the hoop. The inside of the hoop is now the new outside which in most cases reduces backspace. Looking closer at your pictures I think the shadows”couldn’t have been the green beer” threw me off. They do look stock. Nice car BTW.

  3. Lots of great examples of '39 and 40's sitting low and right...here's another with the perfect stance and tire/wheel size offset etc... @Chris has it nailed. Perhaps Chris might weigh in on your issue.

Edit:...look at me offering others hard earned expertise ;)

Got it around the block. First drive in 60ish years. Only heard very minor rubbing when at full wheel turn pulling into the driveway. The 3/8” spacer seems to have done the trick. We’ll see how it does at speed (I’m a ways off from that).

When I drive a hot rod and hear a tire rubbing, I think of it as a badge of honor. Means I’ve got big enough rubber on the back and low enough in the front.

Haha. For sure. I expected a little rubbing. In fact I want a little rubbi g for all the reasons you stated. The start of this thread I think I would have cause damage if I forced it (been there, done that…still regret it).

That stance is killer. Glad you seemed to have success with the spacer.

Don't be surprised if the springs ,both front and rear, settle a minimum of 1/2 in. in the next 500 to 1000 miles. Just sitting doesn't seem to have the effect that spring flexing from driving has. That has been my experience.

Rubbing and/or scrapping is bad. Call it Kool or whatever you want, but its just wrong no matter what anyone says or how they want to describe it..... Everything needs a margin of error to operate safely.

If you're trying to push the envelope (low, tire sizes, etc.) then you'll inevitably get some rubbing. It can be bad, depending on where it is. I have an edge that contacts my tire tread on really big bumps. Cuts the tread a little, but does nothing else to the tire.

Rubbing on a sidewall is definitely undesirable. A bit of rubbing on sharp turns can be tolerated and accommodated for.

Even my modern pickup rubs and it has stock sized wheels and tires and is stock height, but the mud flaps stick out into the wheelwell just enough to contact when turning a certain way.

I need the rear to settle at least an inch or I’ll be re working it. If/when the front settles, I’ll compensate and adjust things. I’d prefer limited to no rubbing/scraping within reason and safeness and not looking like the proportions are off. It’s a balance obviously. I’ll continue to adjust the setup as it gets driven…hopefully within a few months.

I’m also in the process of painting two more rims for my new 5x16 tires. I took a rim to the paint shop today and scanned the color. Here’s what it matched to. I’ll know later today if it’s a good match. “Wine red” seems like a very fitting name!

What width whitewall did you order for the rear? I'm debating which would flow better visually with a 7.00 rear and a 5:50 front. The 4 inch or 3.5 inch whitewall?

I love the stance of yours and I understand you wanting to keep it. My old 40 coupe I used a 14” tire 185/75-r14 if memory serves me, dropped 40 axle and a Speedway 4-bar setup, posie’s front rev-eye spring. It was low - out back the tried and true 235/75-r15 w/parallel leaf rear suspension an 2” lowering blocks, Maverick 8, sway bar, hd gas shocks and again low. The front rims had a nice negative offset - the rears 6” with no offset and I played with spacers until I had it right even with a full load - the Mav rear was narrow Man I miss that car …

Just stumbled across this thread. Car looks great with the stance!
You've mentioned a few times that the driver's side is lower. This was common on cross leaf (Ford) stuff because of use. Driver gets in and out on just one side, causing it to take a set.
I'd suggest taking measurements every few inches along both sides and document where the car is sitting. It might help to loosen up the suspension, set it down and bounce it a few times, then tighten. You will probably have to build some of those 2x4 wheel blocks so you can get under with it sitting on the tires.

Actually in 1940 Ford had what they called the convertible Coupe. If we're nit picking. Ron
