I would like to take this time to thank my grandparents for moving from Canada (dad's side) and Oklahoma (mom's side) to California in the 40's so I could be born where it does not snow.

1962… this looks like snow, but it is a bad photograph taken by a young kid who was trying his best to be a photographer/writer, but lacked a lot of knowledge. His photo spread of my 58 Impala was classic, filled with mistakes and misinformation. His car knowledge was minimal to say the least. His photo skills also minimal. But, he did look the part with the camera slung around his neck while he was supposedly taking notes on the facts of the Impala and its history.

    Hello,

Long Beach coastal, as well as all along the coast got a lot of snow in 1949. Even places like inland Irvine and the flatlands got snow that normally never gets snow. Along the coast from San Diego to Santa Barbara got their share of snow. We never saw snow on the oceanfront cliffs and hills of coastal Laguna Beach, ever, other than old photos from 1949. So, where did we go to get our share of snow experience?

The local San Bernardino Mountains are a sight to see when coming in for a landing to LAX. It is always on the right side and the landing pattern starts past Palm Springs. But, when the flight attendant and sign in the jet shows “fasten seat belts,” you are now descending in line with the long flat valley at the base of the mountains. So, one side of the incoming landing approach plane has an ocean view, and the other side, the tall mountains of the Big Bear/Lake Arrowhead region, up to 8000 feet +++

Anytime coastal folks get the urge to see real snow, it is an hour or so away. One can always surf in the morning and go skiing in an hour’s drive for the rest of the day. But, for most living in the flat coastal plains, it does get cold, but not cold enough for thick snow. (Except for 1949) Nothing since, other than a somewhat inch or two of hail for a 30 minute spree.

So, when the teenagers started their gatherings in Big Bear City after Christmas every year for years during the 50s to our days in 1960-63, it was the place to go for fun. Picture the black 1958 Impala under a foot or two of snow, a hard start morning program and finally rumbling down the main street where all of the teenagers gathered to do a “Spring Break” scene one day after Christmas Day, every year.

The Impala going down the street still covered with a foot of snow on top was the mode. We had the heater full blast and were getting warm. We were not going to wipe off the snow, for fear of scratching the paint. So, with the normal speed on the city wooded streets, it just slid off to the sides and rear areas.

It was a given and we do not know if the teen gatherings are still going on, after we left Long Beach.

But, snow it does in the local mountains, but relatively snow free in coastal So Cal. If our dad was still around doing his yearly April Opening Day Trout Fishing in Lake Crowley near Mammoth Mountain, he would have to have a full down body suit +a down jacket good for sub zero temperatures. Along with down gloves and booties. So, the locals are still digging out from the constant snow levels.

Skiing in Mammoth? Perhaps until August !!!

    Note:

So far, the deepest snow in the local mountains, on record, for Feb 2024 was 35 inches. As the storms come and go on the Westcoast, the local mountains get fresh snow levels ranging from 12 inches to 26 inches as the storm gets more winter power.

a smattering of new to old...
Our So Cal coastal area: Mystery hail, large enough to make a mini snowman. And, cold enough to wear a super warm, neighbor-“hoodie” sweatshirt in the shade. YIKES !
