There is a local add here for 2 Ford transmissions 3spd with R10 overdrives. At a very good price I may add. He is selling them as rebuild-able cores but have them opened up for inspection and it looks good. My problem is I have a Dodge ..... Everybody wants to run a R10 on them .... with Dodge transmissions. Is it possible I can take the overdrive unit from the Ford and install it on my Dodge transmission? Without thousands of $$ of machine work?
***les just do that I guess the r10 units share internsls. The housings and adaptor plates are different per application. As I understand anyway. The main shaft for ODs are different than non ODs and the case is drilled for the reverse lockout mechanism. That hole isn’t hard to drill if needed. It’s the main shaft amd adapter plate that’s the biggest issue. @Hillbilly Werewolf can answer more MOPAR specific questions than me. But he used GM r10 internals to fix his MOPAR OD
That @Hillbilly Werewolf is a known Hot Rod degenerate ..... We need to be careful here. The reason why I'm asking, is the guy has 2 totally complete transmissions with the electronics .... He started out at $275 for both .... a few weeks later is asking $150 for both. ...... I'm just not sure I can use them on a Dodge. Tempted to buy them just to save from the s**** pile .... Same time I do have a 51 8BA in the corner, it would work there .... maybe ..... Just wondering if I could use the R10 on my Dodge ..... Or just shut up and buy them, figure it out later.
no, you can't use them on a dodge. There are a few parts you can use, but most of it won't fit. You need to find the right transmission in overdrive version to do what you want. Or just get used to having the engine spinning fast, like they did in cars for decades, and it worked just fine. I was driving my "new" old OT car today at 4500 rpm (highway speed) and it was perfectly happy. It has a rather small engine, though
Honestly I Think Jim has all the answers ...... He can save me by driving the corvette over here to Texas .... we can load that 8BA in his trunk ..... I will forget all about Ford transmissions.
If they weren't in Texas, I would buy them for the parts that will work. Solenoids seem to be getting hard to come by. Of course you could just build a Ford and use them.
Yep, I'd buy 'em if they were local. Put the parts on the Bay. Because my Mopar OD is an A833 version.
I would get them for that price, BUT as Squirrel said, the case is specific to the maker of the car. The pinions, ring and planet gears, freewheel clutch, balk ring, solenoid, govenor and some ***orted small parts are all the same. I would think the relays and kickdown switches would also interchange. The lock-out parts are slightly different between them. If you end up with a Mopar OD, you will be glad to have the spares. I had 2 freewheel clutches, and ended up STILL having to bum one from @anthony myrick. You could adapt a Mopar OD rear case onto a non-OD mopar (p***enger car) front case with just drilling and tapping a few holes. ETA: looking at the ad, i recend what I said. I would be wary of those two for thar price. Taken apart and "most likely the pinions are bad" That takes a bulk of value out of them. The freewheeling clutch is likely trashed too, so not really getting a whole lot of value...
Just saying I have a Dodge ..... If anything serious happens in the future, I have a 1970 318/3spd ..... While I think the price is right ...... just nothing I can use if it wont fit a Dodge. https://www.facebook.com/marketplac...wse_serp:4b45851b-9b7e-4b32-9ead-9e39fe543085
I have 3 overdrives out in the barn. No clue what they were originally installed on or their condition but considering that I paid a whole $10 apiece for them I figured that I might as well get them. You know just in case.
As much as I am looking forward to swapping in the OD I just built, I have really come to enjoy the full song of my flathead at 3000+rpm on the highway. Modern cars just whispering along at 60, and my old lowered Plymouth howling by at 70, steelpacks snap, crackle and popping at every lift of the pedal. Every push of the pedal rewarded by the surge of power you can only find when you are right at the peak of the power curve....
I've put 15k miles in less than a year on my 62 Vette with it's Muncie 4 speed and 327. It loves going down the road at 3000 rpm at 75 mph. It was made for it!
We broke in my 350 running from Birmingham Al to Charlotte NC. 4:10 gears, th400. 2800-3500 for 11 hours No issues. The old big gas burner trucks we had lived in the 3k - 4K range all day.
