Technical how to make hp with 341 hemi?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Tv Face, Oct 29, 2023.

  1. My view on the DeSoto Hemi is it would be a great motor in a smaller, lighter hot rod like your P/U or Flyin' Brians roadster, particularly for that Hemi 'cachet' if it's a visible component. But in a near-4000 lb DeSoto it's undersized if you're looking for performance. A warmed-over 440 would outperform it at a fraction of the cost.

  4. Here’s the 330 in my 40 pickup. Built by the late owner of RHS and Comp Cams. Internals unknown as well as HP. Single 4V on stock intake, flat top Mallory, HH’s front cover and Sanderson headers. Just a cruzer, but I have the 2x4 setup for it if the need arises.

Curious what did they do for valve train. solid lifters? adjustable rockers or pushrods? And do you have any detonation problems with higher compression ratio.

  6. My best friend and next-door neighbor when I was growing up began driving his dad's '57 DeSoto four door when he turned 16. That 341 was a torque monster, especially after the rebuild after a blown head gasket. His dad was a TWA mechanic and a died-in-the-wool Mopar man. We towed a heavy, home-built camping trailer all over Missouri with that DeSoto. When my friend got a job after high school his dad helped him buy a '63 Plymouth former Kanas Highway Patrol two-door with a 383 and torqueflite. The DeSoto made its way to the family farm in north-central Missouri. Both my friend and his dad are long gone. I'm 75 now and too old to start a new project, but every once in awhile I fantasize about going back up to that family farm, looking into one of the outbuildings (which are still there according to Google Maps) and pulling that DeSoto onto a slide-off, bringing it back home and pulling the engine for transplant into a '29 Model A standard coupe.
Flyin' Brian nails it with his roadster.

HMMMMM well there was cars running nitrous as early as 1959 and they were selling kits in 1964. ( 10,000 RPM brand )
So unless I missed something in the HAMB rules( apologize if I did ) a prehistoric nitrous kit would get you to 400 HP pretty easy .

I imagine a good cam , some porting , High compression pistons and a good intake and a good carb or two and headers would get you there as well . Basic hot rod stuff

Your looking to increase hp on a 341" engine by 55 HP its not out the real of that difficult . likely a good home made intake and a cam would do it .

...and they were all recalled when it was discovered that driving in close proximity to a radio station made them whack out. I wonder who the first person was to experience that?
