a Custom 1958 Cad El Dorado Brougham Nomad Station Wagon

    Hello,

When we got our 1940 Willys Coupe running and competing in our first B/Gas cl***, we always had company next door in the pits. Bill Moxley, the “Cheater Slick King…” always moved into the next area. It did not matter if our 58 Impala was the one racing earlier, he pulled up next to us and started being friends.

His friendship was good and he was a good salesman. There were always folks that stopped by and bought a set of cheater slicks or regular slicks from him, if they were the right size.

But, he had to know the average size of stock cl*** cheater slicks that sell the most. Then he had a couple of compe***ion slicks thrown in his display, too. So, what did he use for his “shop truck?” A nice shiny 1958 Cadillac El Dorado Brougham Sedan. The black sedan had a silver top. It was a very cool looking set up. The only problem was that he had blankets all over the p***enger seat, the rear seat and trunk. He stored those cheater slicks and packed them in place and brought them outside in the pits.

He was packed in and when he was finished for the day, he put what he did not sell back in the same three spots of the Cadillac Brougham. We all thought he was nuts to do that and not have a nice pick up truck or at least a big station wagon. But, he was a character. And, I did say he was a good salesman.

In the early days of 1958-59, my brother bought a set of cheater slicks for the 58 Impala. A couple of the top racers in the A/Stock car cl*** were using them. So, in order to even out the odds, he bought a set. We ran them for a couple of weeks, did not notice much of a difference, but my brother was getting faster due to his compe***ive a***en. Practice, practice was quicker off of the starting line. The slicks did not improve the times/speeds that much.

But, we kept at it since those top guys were still using them. Finally, a week or so later, we were getting ready to get in the staging lanes to compete or make a run. The tech guys came over and told all Stock car cl***es that no one could use “cheater slicks” in the factory stock cl*** eliminations. Some one told them the slicks were not for sale at the factory parts department or a special order item. So, the tech committee banned all “cheater slicks from the factory stock cl***es. (warmup runs and trial timed runs were ok to use them) My brother sold his cheater slicks to a friend for that teen’s street car.

    Note:

In thinking back, those days were exciting. Meeting new friends was something. But, in all fairness, Bill Moxley had some pizazz… He was the only guy to drive a new 58 Cadillac El Dorado Brougham to the drags. It was a wonder he did not enter it in the stock car races. But, many years later, the photo inspired me to draw a Custom, Cadillac El Dorado Brougham “Nomad” Style Station Wagon that could have stored many more pairs of Moxley Cheater Slicks to and from Arizona, weekly…
upload_2024-4-19_2-15-8.png The original fin area looked funny when drawn on the "Nomad" style wagon. So, a longer smooth body shaped fin was custom created. Plus, the weight of the "extra" slicks did make the custom Cad Nomad wagon, lower in stance.

Or, a lowered rake just gave the big, custom, station wagon some added posture and more “pizazz…” YRMV

Nothing too polished this week, just a tied down preliminary composition sketch. The final version is quite different, with a more stock appearing % window coupe and a modern airplane.
This '31 is sectioned and channeled over the rails with a mild 1-2" chop!
( I should'a saved this for Memorial Day. Maybe I'll have time for an updated version!)
Cheers to al, have a nice weekend!

I'm late to the party, but here's some woodgrain again. The brown is a 35 Packard 12, the reddish is a 34 3W. This is raw, I'll post next week once it's "warmed up" with a top coat. All done freehand with brushes, no rollers or stencils. Enjoy...
