Littleman...thanks for asking how the coupe did.

Yes, it was a disappointing day for me.

I drove the A all morning on friday, terrorizing Dallas with Evel for Mad Fabricators....no problems. Took off in it heading for Austin, ran and drove great..averaged about 90-95 mph for the first 150 or so miles....made it about 25 miles from Austin, and got stuck in traffic. We sat still for about 15 minutes, and it started to heat up. Blew the front seal in the (original unrebuilt) water pump. I had a spare in the chase truck that I had just ordered from Kanter, because I knew that was one part I couldn't get from any local parts store. The one thing I forgot was that I put Chevrolet pulleys on it, and I had the old water pump redrilled for the pulley. So I had to try to drill and tap the holes on the side of the road with a cordless drill and a tap set that I had to go get from Autozone. It took an hour to drill one hole because the battery kept dying, so I tapped that and put one bolt in it to hold the fan and pulley on and drove it to Austin. Next morning I borrowed a drill press and got it put together right.

Drove to the track, no problems other than running out of gas about 25 yards from a gas station on the way there, Got to the track really late and either the starter or the battery cable was getting too hot to start the car. We push started it and I got to make a p***. I slipped the clutch too much on the burnout and take-off and it wasn't putting the power to the ground and launched poorly. Ran pretty good after it started hooking, but they only timed me in the 1/8th on that run...ran mid 8 something at 83 mph in the 1/8th.

After letting it cool off for a while, the starter miraculously started working again. Got it started and took it to the line. This time the clutch hit the tires hard, and I went all over the place. I had to pedal it two or three times to get it straightened out and keep from hitting the guardrail or tree, and then short-shifted it through the rest of the run. Still ran a 14.29 at 98 something. It'll run 12's easily with slicks and rapping it up and shifting just right.

Speaking of slicks, I brought them to put on the car, but left the ****ing mag lugnuts at the shop. So I had to run the skinny Firestones. I also brought some good gas, and thought I'd put some in the tank, until later in the day when I realized that the air release on my new gas jug was sealed, and not letting gas come out of the spout. So I was running on pump gas those two runs. It runs LOTS better on good gas.

So anyway I went to run the third run in the eliminations section, did a burnout and got to the line and they backed me off. My NEW Kanter water pump was dripping from the weep hole. I was ****ing pissed!

So I only got to run twice and neither of those runs were really worth a ****. Very disappointing. I haven't been able to concentrate for the last few days since my dog p***ed away on Wednesday, so some of the problems are probably a result of that.

I filled the radiator full of water and drove the car about 15 miles to a family friends house and left it until Sunday when we could pick it up with a trailer. Didn't want to take a chance on it getting hot and hurting the motor.

Oh well, **** happens I guess. Next year she'll be sorted out better, and hopefully I can get some practice runs in between now and then. Still going to try to take it up to the Pileup this weekend...Gotta get the water pump and starter squared away.

PS...congrats to Ed 'Boom Boom' Cannon...that little T came alive this weekend! Nice work!

Well ****, I was gonna give you a hard time now I don't think I can...

I guess that's racin. It was fun to see/hear you make the less than perfect runs though!

Here's my comment: "B***' Coupe? Who knew it'd take the voice of holy-helfire 14+ seconds to travel 1/4 mile?"

It really is an incredible looking and SOUNDING coupe. I think just about everybody in the stands was pulling for you...

Yeah, I know people are going to give me **** about the whole thing, but I've got pretty thick skin....so do your worst. I'm pretty sure that I know what the car is capable of, and I'll just leave it at that for now.

I had that dog for 9 years, by the way. It's been rough.

The detonation you heard is a result of a lot of advance. I thought I had the good gas in it, so I turned the advance up. It wouldn't have done that with the good stuff in it.

Yes, I know the headers are little too close to the starter. I may have to order a mini starter to fix it. I'm also going to go to a heavier gauge cable...I have a 4 ga. battery cable right now, and I think it's getting too hot.

I'm going to keep the stock water pump for now. I don't think I have enough room for the Chevrolet pump and adapter.

Congrats on getting into the mid-13's Rusty...that's movin'!

It was obvious what the car was capable of...

It was my second favorite car there, behind the dirty 30/31 roadster...
But then again I got a thing for 30/31 roadsters on duece rails... ;)

I was impressed by the number of truely fast little cars that were there.

Does that give us enough clout to dictate what music they play over them track loudspeakers next time...? I swear that Michael McDonald music gave me a stomach virus.

Man, I was thinking about that as well. Seems like that owner of a world famous music club could come up with a couple of decent CD's!:D

We'll try to get some better tunes next year for you guys that are just there for the "scene".:D

  14. Ed, congrats man! That T ran its *** off.

    A B*** story -
Friday night, B*** lost his waterpump pretty close to my house. I left the Continental Club and drove out to see if he needed help. I got there and he was adding water....ready to hit the road. He told me of the one bolt in the fan and figured it was good enough to get back to the hotel. He tells me "I'm gonna take it easy" so that the fan doesn't loosen.

Well, he fires that monster up and blows a **** load of "highway construction dust" all over my coupe. It was enough dust that my flathead just died. I went to start it again. That hemi was so loud that I was mistaken and just ***umed the flattie didn't start I couldn't hear or feel my own engine.... So I hit the starter once again only to tear it to pieces when it hit the flywheel of the already running engine. I couldn't do anything but laugh.

So we take off towards Austin. By the time I got in to 3rd he was out of my sight. So much for "taking it easy" Brian. But at least I could hear that old flathead singing again. My dad always said to "get on the porch when a big dog comes down the street!" :D

Sorry to hear about your dog. I never met him, but I know from experience that it is like losing a member of the family. :(

I saw the coupe at Roundup, and then again when you were having the problems Saturday. I don't think that anyone who has heard that thing run doubts it has a LOT of potential.

    Brian -
Both Linda and I were talking and we were real proud of you busting hard and impressing the crowd. Everyone in the stand stopped talking and watched with anticipation as you made your first p***. We both remember the car as a mocked up pile in the corner. It's really come a long way and we all know how killer every bit of that car is. I think you'll be hard pressed to find anyone who would give you **** about that car.

We both also wanted to say how sad we are hearing about Eli. When we were at the shop on Thursday, we both noticed that he wasn't walking around and hoped he was alright. We both wanted to say how cool he was and again, send out our condolences for your best buddy.

Eli gets a prayer from us.

    Take care.

Really sorry about your dog Brian. I've lost a few really good ones.

I only ran once, my goal was to get a patch, but it was obvious that I wasn't gonna get there. Last year I was running about 88, this year the car was a heck of allot faster, but only hit 96 at 14.6. The cheaters were basically spinning all the way into 2nd. The motor has never run better, but I've just got to get it to the ground. I'm gonna make a few changes and give it another shot next year. I've learned a bunch and had allot of of fun trying to hit 100 in this thing. I have a dragster that needs to get built someday, but I really want my old pile of parts to hit 100 first.

Crease, you'll get there. We'll talk this weekend about what changes you may need to make to get there. I've learned a little on my journey to 100 mph. Not an expert, or anything, but our cars are similar.

I'd love to take a ride in your car if we have time on Saturday.

I ran a 14.18 at 96 with no clutch. Then drove 60 miles to the house with no clutch.
    Barley made it.
    Perfect day.

Now I finally have a good excuse to tare the Whistler down.
So she is coming all the way apart after 6 years of who knows how many miles and trips down the drag strip.
Most reliable car I've ever owned, time to show her some love and fix her up.
