I am so excited to score a pair of perfect vintage Cal Custom Panther Scoops. I have always loved the look of a low profile and sleek carb scoop. I want to either mill the "Brodix" off the valve covers or try to find a finned pair of Cal Customs, to wrap it up.
As old man winter creeps in, I tend to find myself migrate to the garage for winter wrenching projects. I have had my eye out for awhile for a Cal Custom Panther scoop. They are quite rare and were sold in pairs to mount to the underside of a hood. A NOS pair came available and I snagged them. I have always thought that it would be an awesome air cleaner, long, sleek, low profile. My II had some nice tall Brodix valve covers and a large 14" air cleaner element with a brushed top. Now, I am a big fan of Brodix, but no real into the whole "advertising" deal. So, I milled the letters off the valve covers and then brushed them. I made a aluminum plate for the bottom of the scoop and attached a billet air cleaner spacer to fasten to the carb. And the final product.
I was thinking when I was reading your original posts that there may not be finned covers available to fit Brodex heads. I am not sure about that, do regular sbc valve covers fit them or not ? Don
The heads are made for center bolt valve covers, but I have a billet adapter to make them four perimeter bolts. So, yes, I believe that regular SBC valve covers would fit. Boucher'
I am using a custom cut filter made from rigid polyester, "Hog hair". Thanks for bringing that topic up. I need to do a flame test on that material, because last thing I want is a flame thrower! Does anybody have any recommendations for a air element? I need to be able to cut it in a rectangle about 1" thick x 5"x12".
Check out an RV dealer. They sell a foam A/C filter material that could be cut & stacked to suit. Put that over a piece of 1/4" wire mesh steel trimmed to fit under the foam, inside the air cleaner covering the inlet. That thing is bad***, BTW. The work you've done on the Brodix is great looking also. But to me, that air cleaner screams for a set old school finned Corvette valve covers. Not very unique I know, but it looks like it was almost made with them in mind!
A motorcycle dealer may have bulk air filter media that you can buy , like K&N or similar that you can oil and use. Designed to be used in that application and not quick to burn.
Oh brother, I just took a lighter to that material... Like the Griswold Christmas tree! Well not really, but it does burn. I have to find a flame retardant material. Thanks for that inquiry, that could have saved my *** big time. Boucher'
I had one years ago sold it on ebay with the full page ad. It shows a pair on top of some car hood. I like your idea
I'm not sure on the brand but here is the other one, never realized how curved they are until looking at this picture closer.
Awesome looking scoop, although I would be looking for some earlier style valve covers that are more rounded and have that vintage look...
