I wish I could tell you the Ford had a full house Flathead, or a hopped up 303 Olds,
but other than the spotlight it was a bone stock 36.

20240418_103038.jpg Being fortunate enough to hang out at this guy's shop. Contributing a few parts to the cause. And, I took a friend with me who just happened to have a lot in common with Marty. Jeep racers from 50 (?) years ago.....my friend lost his wife two months ago on their 47th wedding anniversary. He couldn't stop talking about Marty on the trip home (90 minute drive). It was a good day!

  11. Not really Bill ran that car with that body for about three years. Just as most guys ran the same car and body for multiple years.

I don't know where this idea come from that they would beat, bang tear up a car and go get another.
These were working class guys guys with families they couldn't afford to buy and build four or five cars a year.

Also how would they have the time?
They would work eight hours or more at their regular, repair a totaled racecar or build a new one during the week be ready for the next Saturday night and do this every week during the summer?

It seems that would get very tiring and expensive very quickly.

My 1st HAMB friendly build, before the HAMB existed. My 35 Dodge 2 door slant back sedan, after I drug the pile of rust home. That is actually partly mocked up. The entire body came home in the bed of a pickup. The youngster is my son, probably around 6 or 7 then (he is 40 now). That was about the time I figured out I was going to have to build a frame from scratch. It took me 3-4 years to figure out how to do that. I worked for a guy that built trailers, and he went on a two week vacation and wanted me to keep his shop open while he was gone. With his permission, I built the frame and attached the body onto it during those two weeks. Then the car went back to my garage until after I opened my welding shop in 94. The car got built at the shop evenings, after working all day. My son and my wife both participated in that build. Picture 084.jpg
This it the same car. I put the roof back on in its original position. At the time of this picture we had driven the car 77,000 miles over 7 years. I ended up selling the car the next summer, painted flack black with flames on it (no pictures of it flamed). The car was replaced with a 54 Dodge pickup I had already built and was on the road. We took the 54 that replaced the 35 to our 1st HAMB drags (probably the 2nd or 3rd HAMB drags).

20180220_183642.jpg Me, the fall of 1980 @ Woodburn dragstrip. My 409 wasn't as fast as it could've been, but at the end of the day, I'm smiling. This memory still makes me smile.
