I have a gm alt which has a metric 10 mm mounting bolt but the bracket has a 3/8 bolt.I have been to a couple of alternator but having no luck locating the spacer they used to sell for this. I have made a temp one with shim stock . Any body know where I can purchase one. Thanks SDLuck

  3. A piece of thick-walled pipe and some longer bolts work.

The piece you made from shim stock is probably as good as it gets...

I think these guys don't understand what you're talking about.

No they don't,3/8 is .375 10 mm is 3937 so the shim needs to be .187

I think it's supposed to be .0187 if my math is correct.

When you buy a rebuilt alternator, they are all drilled for the 10mm bolt, but come with a shim stock sleeve installed in the 10mm hole that drops the ID down to 3/8". This lets the rebuilders stock one part number to fit two applications.

Welcome to Walmart. Wrap too-small bolts to fit too-big boltholes perfectly. Start your own SanJose bolt-wrapping business for a $1.99!

I have not seen that sleeve inserted into rebuilds in my area for quit some time. And you’re correct, the shim stock OP used is just the same as what I’ve seen before. They are crude looking, not exactly round but they did the job.

To OP, it’s a sleeve, not a spacer.

A spacer to take your metric to 3/8 can be bought at an alternator shop. It is a thin sleeve that can be slid into the alternator housing that takes the hole down for your 3/8 bolt. I've used them for years in my shop.

Go to J & N Auto Electric.com. Look at "components", "spacers and mounting bushings" Last item on the first page.
Have dealt with them before and was very happy with products and service.

I just make my own with the appropriate piece of pipe and a hacksaw. A longer bolt to fit through the hole with a nut on the other side works good, too.

Somehow my "thinking out loud" reached my keyboard.
Not sure how long your bolt is, would one of the GM starter bolts with the knurled shank work?

Thats not the spacer OP is worried about. The bolt is .375 and the hole in alt is .3937, so needs a .009 wall sleeve. Why worry, don't know.

You can Krurl / dimple ping & easily get the 0.009 size , if No smooth shank , use a longer bolt with shank , Rethread further down shank , then cut to fit
Or rap S.S / ext ,wire strain into threads ,,, there are quite a few ways to get to where you need ,,,,

In essence, math was invented because it offered practical solutions to complex problems encountered by ancient civilizations.
