Hi All, I purchased a '55 Pontiac Chieftain motor to replace my seized '57 347 motor. I've managed to save alot of the parts from the 347, which are still in decent shape. Can I swap parts from the 347 onto the 287? For example, can I swap the 2 barrel '55 manifold for the '57 4 barrel manifold and use the '57 carburetor? Can I swap the heads, the fuel pump, the water pump? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks. Dave
I had a 56 GMC/Pontiac 316 which is the same as your 287. I used a later 4 barrel intake on as well as a set of after market finned rocker covers.
Thanks Jimmy. I'm just not sure if the 347 manifold ports would align with the 287 ports. Any challenges swapping in the 4 barrel?
All of the parts you mentioned should be interchangeable. Look closely at the head gaskets just to be sure.
Sure but keep in mind the 55, 287 had adjustable rockers where anything later used torque to spec rockers. I'd include the 347 pushrods too because I'm not sure if they are the same length as 287s. I have a 287 with 1959, 389 heads, intake and AFB on it...works great! My 347 engine [avatar] has 1974 GTO heads, intake etc. Been working great for a long time and many miles.
I remember them '74 goats... A 428 from a '69 Grand Prix in one of those Nova clones would turn those into a nice little sleeper....
The 347 intake will run well on the 287. 347 Heads will be fine too but you will want the exhaust manifolds as well. The 287 had rather diminutive ports. The resulting engine will breath great but you might give up a little low end torque. You will give up some compression as well. Solution? Bore to 316. Or better yet, align bore the block for the 347 crank! And then bore to 370... Get cracking! Summer is coming.
