I picked up an old Superior Performance Products “500” steering wheel at a swap meet…

I’d like to get an installation (boss) kit to fit it to the Land Rover Series 2 column I’m planning on using on my project.

The splined shaft of the column is 3/4 diameter with 48 splines. Looking at the Grant installation kits on their website, it does not say what the spline count/diameter is of any of the installation kits, it just has an ‘application search’ where you put the year, make, model etc. of your car to find the correct kit. I did the search for Land Rover and it has nothing.

    So my question is…
What American cars/trucks had 3/4 diameter, 48 spline, steering wheels/column.

If I can find that out, then I can find the appropriate installation kit. I’ve searched on here and google but can’t seem to find a list or anything that has this info.

    Any help appreciated.

    Glen.

If you can't find one, there may be an altenative. Do you have the Land Rover steering wheel?
I put a Saturn column in my '54 Ford and I wanted to install this Cal Custom wheel.....

Come to find out, no one makes an adapter for a Saturn.....go figure!
So, I made my own adapter from the Saturn steering wheel. If the Rover wheel has an aluminum center (like the Saturn wheel) you should be good to go.

I stripped the Saturn wheel then cut out the center with a Sawzall......

Then I trimmed it to fit on my bandsaw.......

I wanted the self cancelling feature so I removed the turn signal cam from my '54 column and welded it to the steel insert on the Saturn piece. The Saturn insert is a smaller diameter so I had to build up the edges with a weld bead to trigger the cancelling mechanism.

Drilled and tapped three 1/4" x 28 holes in the adapter to mount the wheel.

I used an adapter cover that came in a Grant wheel adapter kit I had laying around. Fit perfectly! Grant #4510.

The wheel bolted right up and works perfectly!

Thanks for that reply, it will be useful I’m sure, if not to me, then someone else.

I don’t have a Land Rover steering wheel, just the column.
Here in New Zealand, we have a certification process and I’m pretty sure that this modification would not be allowed… but I will look into it further.

I would prefer to get a legit boss to fit and surely there must be a boss that will fit the Land Rover column.

Hopefully someone might know, but I’ll keep searching in the meantime.

Then machine a disc to adapt the wheel to the Boss

The 3 bolt wheel looks similar to a "Grant" steering wheel that the speedway crowd use

Try Ebay for a wheel. Maybe ask in a Rover forum, might get lucky.

Ahh, yes, Thanks. I had just been looking at similar ones and have found that you can actually buy 6-bolt to 3-bolt adapters for these. So that’s a potential winner.

Alternatively, I suddenly remembered an old Springalex boss I had and went searching for it not knowing if it was even the right size, but it is. Slides onto the Landy column nicely. Perhaps I can make an adapter ring for this…

  7. I guess you know early LandRover had a nice banjo steering wheel. Is one of those to big for your car ?

Yes, the original banjo wheel would be nice, as would any old banjo such as Morris Minor. I have an old Triumph 2500 steering wheel (not banjo) and it fits but doesn’t really do it for me, plus they are all a bit big. It’ll be going in a ’23 T roadster and I’m 5’11”. Still just parts gathering currently and this small (13”) SPP wheel I think will be a good size.

I was hoping to find the correct Grant Installation Kit to just bolt directly on without adapters and whatnot, but I think the Springalex one will work without too much trouble.

Still keen to find the right thing though, so if anyone does know of any old American cars/trucks that have 3/4 diameter, 48 spline, steering wheels/column, that would help as the Grant bosses all seem to be for American cars. But if I can’t get one and the Springalex adaptation doesn’t work, then I’ll go for the 6-bolt boss with 3-bolt to 6-bolt adapter.

    Glen.
