I have a top loader from a 68 Mustang with a tag number of RAN-S. It has the smaller input shaft and is 6 1/2 inches long. The offy adapter (304) that I can pick up only allows 1/4 of an inch depth of the pilot. I would like to avoid the pilot extension adapters if possible. Wondered if there is a swap of the input shaft that will increase the length of the input. I have no experience with these trannies and wondered if one of the Ford experts could chime in on this subject. Is there a web source available that provides the info?
The bad news is contrary to what one might expect, the FE input shaft (6.125") is shorter than that of your SBF (6.50"). jack vines
There's very little side load on the input shaft and pilot bearing, I would be tempted to just run it.
There's more than you think. Failure to get full engagement can result in the pilot shaft 'egg-shaping' the hole. The fix is a steel bearing rather than a bronze bushing. These are available for some motors, a trip to a bearing house may turn up one for others.
Yep didn't know pilot lenght diff, certainly egged the pilot bushing pretty good but caught it in time when I changed trans.
