Hello all, hope you guys can save me time on my Speedo. I have a aod and put a Speedo cable and when I went for my first drive it was off but was working. It was not slowing down like it should. Then it shot up to 90 and made a terrible noise from the dash. Did my Speedo in the cluster go bad? Was something not right caused it to break? It's a 59.

You may try lubricating it with lubriplate . Take the cable out of the housing and lube it as you put it back into the housing. Had to do this a lot when I worked at a Ford Truck dealer back in the '70's.

Mine is a 56 speedo so not sure if 59 was still like this but besides lubing the cable, there is also a tiny weep hole with felt in it on the back of the speedo, just above where the cable attaches, that possibly needs a few drops of 3 in 1 oil in it. My speedo did exactly what you are describing after I had lubed the cable multiple times until I finally decided to pull the speedo and oil it.

Well, since I worked for Ford, it was probably that Motorcraft PTFE. It's been about 45 years ago. (Hard to believe).

So it was the Speedo itself. Something in it went bad. I pulled my original one out of my broken cluster and lubed it up and is good to go.
