Fuel pump went out today so I took it apart And the diaphragm itself is good. It's just the 2 little ports, aren't sealing on the inside. I've got what appears to be in autolight FB 4006 fuel pump. If I type what I need into the internet. I get a variety of fuel pumps. And nothing really looks the same even the arms are different. I've looked for a rebuild kit also and haven't found anything. Does anybody have a part number or a cross reference? Like from a later Mopar of some kind?
I bought a rebuild kit from this fellow at the Charlotte autofair a couple years ago, worked well https://cowboyjohnsautoparts.com/ Good luck
I had good luck with Then & Now. Their rebuild kits are made to work with ethanol blends. Call them up, they will answer the phone and get you the right kit. https://www.then-now-auto.com/product-category/fuel-pump-kits/chrysler-fuel-pump-kit/
What model and what engine? We can't help if you turn it into a guessing game without exact info. In 1967 I had a Plymouth with that same body style with a red ram Dodge hemi in it.
Cowboy John. Made a visit to his place in Fla. visiting friends. Quite a collection of parts he has and contacts for rebuilt parts. Got a NOS water pump for a 1949 Ford 226 from him.
Do not automatically buy a 'spacer' that is said to allow for an LA pump. There were a variety of arm shapes for the 51-58 C-P-D-D. If you have a friendly auto parts store do this: Place your oem pump against the edge of the work bench with a piece of paper under the arm. Trace around the arm and mark where the bolts are. Also, mark where the rub spot is on the arm. Now, overlay one of the later A-LA pumps on the paper. Move the new pump forth/back but keep the bolt holes lined up until the rub spot aligns with the new arm. Now you know how thick the spacer needs to be. Yes, a rebuild kit would be good.
Thanks, I've heard the horror stories about the spacers Not working right and I'd rather get a rebuild kit.
I talked to cowboy john this morning and he said the Pump that I have He won't rebuild because they're not great from the beginning. He said he will rebuild a airtex 4280 pump for me that will bolt right in but I won't have it probably for a week and a 1/2. I called my local parts guy That's really great and he crossed the number to another number. I should have it this afternoon and hopefully the arm is right. If all works out, I'll have a pump on the motor and a spare pump in the trunk.
It's definitely Crossed my mind mark. I've got a pump here on the shelf. If the one this afternoon doesn't work out, I probably will do that and then have it on a switch.
saves a lot of cranking the way gas evaporates these days, I have elec helper pumps on all of my old cars. bonus is if the mech pump goes out, hit the switch and keep driving
Hope you get it sorted out, and I don't want to sidetrack you thread but......ONE tree in the entire landscape and it's in the ****ing median????
Kanter lists one. Not cheap and doesn't give much specifics https://www.kanter.com/i-30538799-fuel-pump-1955-1972-plymouth-8-cylinder.html?q=fuel+pump
I think Kanter got the listing wrong. It will not fit the 241/259/270 engines The spacer from Hot Heads is 1/2 thick and will not work for you. I tried it on my 241. I have dual electric pumps due to being left on the side of the road to often. I thank you for starting this thread. I will see if I can buy a rebuild kit. If no go, I may buy a 318 pump for parts. Maybe??
Success! So the pump Number was an airtex 4280. Which crossed to this number, that's on the box. I thought the arm might not lineup, but when held side by side. It rested on the same spot so I tossed it in the car and it works great so far. And then the radiator started weeping...
1955 was the first year for Plymouth V8. They used a variety of different size (displacement) motors, I believe some were Dodge based while others were brand new, Plymouth only, that later evolved into the 318 wide block. So there could be different pumps for different motors.
As stated, the spacer will not work on the 241-270 engines. The water pump housing does not leave enough room. I just bought a new pump from RockAuto. $75 shipped. The pumps for a Chrysler will work. The Hemi engines all used the same front cover, pump drive system. Any Hemi pump will work.
Got the new fuel pump on the other day and it ran fine. But I really wanted to replace all the steel fuel lines. So I did that and added an Auxiliary electric pump at the rear on a toggle switch. Just made it home 25 miles, no problem. Still waiting on a headlight switch that might be here tomorrow or Saturday.
Made it all the way home fine and then stopped by the upholstery shop in the morning to drop off my sunvisors, and the car died. Not picking up fuel from the gas tank. When I had the tank out, I got it really, really clean but the pick up tube and filter sock I couldn't get to And I kept getting chunks of **** out of it. So I rolled the dice and the fuel filter right after the tank is full of junk. So I just ordered a new tank as I don't want to go through this **** again like I did on my old 55.
If you can find a AC part number PM it to me and I’ll look through the fuel pumps I have . I looked through What I have now have a oval shaped body
This was a long time ago and have not done this myself to confirm it. But a friend of my claimed to replace the arm on the smallblock pump to the one from the broken stock pump to make it work.
