Back in my teen years I was pretty good at riding a unicycle. Never attempted the beer cases-on-the-shoulders trick. That kid had talent!
Went over that bridge many times, seeing a semi coming in the opposite direction was always stomach churning. The new divided bridge is elevated and safer, the old bridge is for fishing . The some of the guard rails on the old bridge are railroad tracks from the tracks destroyed in the '35 hurricane, always appreciate the photos.
@jeepsterhemi Hello, We lived in a small house in a neighborhood close to an elementary school. It was a working family neighborhood and most folks went to work daily. Our mom was a stay at home mom and our neighbor worked in a small factory about three blocks away. So, she walked everyday to work, while we (my brother and the two brothers from the neighbor) walked to the elementary school in the opposite direction. Then a few years passed and a little girl comes into the scene and now the neighbor could not take the baby to work. So, she was able to get the company to set up a home workshop in a back bedroom for her contract work. Usually, the little girl spent all day at our house with our mom as the happy attendant, it was a new thing for her after two rambunctious boys... It was a great set up and our mom was happy. The large window above my brother’s head, was the work room for our neighbor. Sometimes the sound of the two separate sewing machines were louder than the Impala idling past into and out of the garage. The sound of the machine motors was constant… whirr, whirr, whirr then a stop for adjustments then continuous whirr, whirr, whirr again. The sewing went on from early morning to after school hours. She had an Industrial Singer sewing machine like the photo. She also had a larger industrial sewing machine for larger projects, like jackets and coats. It was “work from home” in the early days. When she was finished with the day’s contracted work, they drove the items to the industrial building and off loaded them to the days products completed area. We helped her carry all of the finished products into the factory drop off location. Jnaki We were allowed to go see the larger Singer Machines. But after that, the room was off limits, since the finished product was a money producing business. Our mom also did sewing with her own small Singer Sewing Machine. The difference was in the size compared to the industrial one, next door. It was like a teenager compared to a young kid in size. At first, she had a foot stomping plate machine, then finally a foot operated electric pedal to make the whirring noises. Variable speed at its earliest… Ever tried to sew anything on a modern sewing machine? Now add your memory to a foot pedal operated speed adjusting mode for the needle to work its magic on the clothing or parts on the flat sewing area. Times have changed and more for the better. Even an old guy or 20 something at the time could use an automatic variable power sewing machine... YRMV
