Technical Looking for actual blueprints of Differential carriers.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 31Vicky with a hemi, Apr 30, 2024.

  1. I know some place some where there are actually blueprints/drawings of differential carriers, there has to be.
Any body know of a place to find them?
    Thanks

sure, the companies that made them originally, had detailed drawings. Why they would ever release them publicly, or how you could get ahold of them, it not at all obvious to me.

Someone like Curry ent. Probably has some , whether or not they'd share is another ? . If I may ask , what, specifically ,are you looking for . Might be easier to find .

  5. Yeah I kind of figured as such but thought it would be worth the post.
Plus a lot of this crap is 60 years old.
some design team member probably has got drawings hung up like wall art in their den, maybe started a fire with them.

A fella can find a drawing for just about every other kind of gear box

You could measure and draw every one you work on, and post them online, then we'd get the drawings you desire.

That's something a 3D scanner + AI might actually be useful for.

you'd still need to measure things, eh?

it's not real likely that the guys who have the parts in hand, also have the equipment to make drawings automatically.

Try the website scribd. I have found some very interesting drawings there for OT projects.

A 3D scanner will produce a 1:1 scale output. The trouble is that models generated like that are a nightmare to work with — especially as everything is invariably going to be at a slight angle to the scanner's coordinate system. AI could be useful in identifying centreline axes and things like that, without you having to do a lot of complex 3D geometry, keeping track of exactly which of the thousands of vertices you were working with. AI is good at stuff like, "This looks like it's supposed to be a circle. If that is so, its centre is here."

3D scanners are becoming quite affordable.

  11. Exactly,
    Here’s the subject -
    Specific carrier from
65&66 Oldsmobile B body (some of them)
Olds got their own for 67
65-70 Pontiac B body full size (almost all 98%)
71-76 pontiac B body full size (some of them)
This is in the big car rear ends,
a 8-3/4” 12 bolt ring gear under a 10 bolt cover. They use 31 spline axles.

The parts outlets have gear sets incorrectly listed for this application. There’s also a company or 2 that have carriers incorrectly listed for the application as well.
Fabcraft had previously had correct gear sets 3.55:1 for this application.

Possibly wishful thinking that another less obscure unit can be modified or adapted to fit.
Sort of like bolting a SBC water pump onto a Chrysler hemi.
There are other applications of carrier swapping with adapter bearings out there.

I have a few of those available here to measure. What I don’t have is others to see drawings of what might be close. After I get close I can get them under the microscope. I can’t get 40,50 of them. But I could look thru 40-50 drawings

Can get a 9” built, just under $4000,

The above has regular axle bearings held by 4 bolt retainers [like Ford], not c-clips?

Isn’t that diff referred to as the “O” type axle?

  15. I’m understanding it as it’s actually a P.
After 67 Olds developed their own O axle instead of using Pontiac axles.

  16. Somewhat promising,
I found a place to call Monday.
I’m thinking they might actually be able to help. A Smaller company of car guys helping car guys, just a different genre.
They’ve done this with at least a dozen different applications already.
