I have one an wondered if it was worth keeping and rebuilding or just get rid of the thing. It is an Borg Warner T-86. What are there weaknesses/strengths, the good or bad of these?
I have been told that the OD portion is pretty strong as well as the trans. It would be a good seller type, provided the gears are still all there.
The 3 speed gears are the same as the standard 3 spd. 55 and earlier have a 6 volt solenoid. The 56 up 12V solenoid is desireable even if the rest is ruined for all the 12V converted OD shoeboxes. The relay on the firewall has value also if it is still available. I got one late in life and loved it. With the 4.11 gears from the factory, it makes the car fun around town. Shove it down into OD and cruise on the interstate. I don't think anyone ever said they were bullet proof but they aren't made of peanut ****er either.
I have one of those from a ford p/u I plan to put in my f-1. I spoke to a old ford guy yesterday , he has one in his 56. He says you can put a switch under the dash to shift the overdrive. In theory you could have 6 foward and 2 reverse. For what reason i dont know.
Mine ****ed. Darn thing just wouldnt work without gear oil haha. Awesome trans, final drive on my earlier (50) unit was like .65 final drive, awesome with the steep Merc gears. Flew in the left lane.
they aint made of peanut ****er . . . LOL they're good trans for cruisin... one thing i know is the later 12v solenoids do NOT just snap into the 6v OD units. . . there is something different about the lenght of the solenoid bar that pulls the trans in and out of OD... shorter i think? there is a guy in kansas that does a 12v conversion for the solenoids, no idea on price tho. here is a link to a page about wireing one up without the kickdown and relays and stuff... pretty much makes it all switch operated. http://www.cl***ictruckshop.com/clubs/earlyburbs/projects/over/drive.htm another for checking the solenoids http://www.btc-bci.com/~billben/ovrdrive.htm
