I ordered tie rod ends for my daily through Summit. Moog. I did so because Moogs site says “forged steel”

But I received two cast pieces with a Moog boot.
Not sure why/how, but they go back tomorrow.

Ever bought new sparks plugs only to get home and open up someone else's used crap? Someone probably pulled a switcharoo return and got restocked without being checked. I bought an oil filter at O'Reilly's, once home I opened it and paint was chipped on the outside and oil stain in the bottom of the box. F&#$'n bastards.

Your not...likely going to find "forged" steering pieces from...anyone, anymore ! A thing of the past.
I just bought similar parts from a local parts shop for my own car. While yes, they are cast, they ARE good parts. Harder than the average cast iron, and plenty "thick" material.
You aren't going to break them, without going off a cliff !

Your new tie rods are cast steel and may well be forged. Take a look at another tie rod also claiming to forged steel. It has the same rough surface as your Moogs and is sold by Summit.

Interesting. Googled this topic, and found threads on other forums going all the way back to 2005 questioning the “casting line” vs MOOG’s product statements saying they are forged. I’m no expert, but I would say they look cast as well. Found this on a MOOG Q&A site. MOOG replies they are cast iron (finish)? I would ask them directly. Curious to know as I used some last year on my DD.

I think its more important to know if its cast iron or cast steel.

Huh? Cast, yet forged? How’s that work?

Are original tie rod ends in any way rebuildable?
Could you use the guts of a new one installed in the original forging?

I’ve been hearing bad reviews about Moog products over the last few years. Friend of mine kept eating front end parts on his o/t truck until he switched brands.

Curious what a Brinell test would conclude.

That was my thinking as well. Ie Scat cranks are cast steel.
    They don’t claim a forging.

The fine line on that tie rod end says casting as others have suggested. There is no information on the Moog 'site about cast or forged being used for tie rod ends but they do tout all the other improvements they have made.

IMG_0462.png So here’s a zoomed in pic of a Detroit Speed TRE.

That looks like a forging to my eyes.

    Yes sir.
There's many grades of both iron and steel !
Some of each are strong, some, not so much.
    Shouldn't whine until you know.
BUT...yes, advertizing one thing, then giving something different isn't nice .

Maybe a mis box, maybe it was a standard Moog and was supposed to be the Problem solver line? Who knows.

Id still run it on anything I owned. Forged vs cast on a part like this would take some serious flying off a cliff to break the cast, I just dont see much benefit here for forged completely tie rod ends.

Ive thought moog were junk since over 20- 30 years ago when I replaced a chevy 4x4 truck front axle steering knuckle ball joints with moog and they were worn out, loose after only a couple years low mileage driving. They were their supreme $$ super duper heavy duty ones too

Maybe I’m getting gun shy, but I have visions of tooling down the freeway at 65 MPH and hitting a pothole, one snapping and having a rodeo on my hands.
These are going back to Summit though. I’ll figure something else out.

Almost all forged parts begin ass castings. They're rarely forged from bar stock. So the castings are a bit oversized and general shape, then forged to final shape prior to machine work.
But a forged part will not have the rough sand finish once it's shaped through forging.

    Alan,
Take a closer look at the parting line, notice the width of the ones you posted, vs the thin line of the one I posted.
It wasn’t the rough finish that made me do a double look, it was the thin parting line.
