Any pictures experts know if 326 headers fit a 316? Looking to pick up lake pipes, but only see 326-455 listed. It appears that they share exhaust pattern, but would like to verify

The 287,288, 316, 347, 370 and early 389(1959) do share some components and all have reverse flow cooling.
The exhaust manifold gaskets appear to only fit 287,288 & 316's
There is a old paper back book by Pete McCarthy called "Pontiac Performance - 1955 to 1979" worth picking up if you're going to play with any of them.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the 326 a round port head while the 316 is a D port head?

The exhaust manifolds on Pontiacs from 1959 through 1979 will physically bolt on any engine from that range of years, except for the few high performance engines with round port exhaust (no, the 326 did not have round ports.) I'm not all that familiar with engines older than that but I *think* their exhaust manifolds are different.
Nearly all parts sources use '326-455' in their listings since the demand for anything older is so small.

Thanks. I would then have to believe they would work.

The exhaust ports on a 56 316 are quite a bit smaller than the 57 and newer ones, the 55 287 is even smaller than the 56.
I had to find a set of 57 manifolds ( driver side dumps to the front ) for my 56 when i installed a 59 389, Bolted right on, no leaks,

A 1956 316 head has exhaust ports that are reminiscent of a 303 Oldsmobile. The center port isn't split like the later Pontiac engines. I don't think that headers intended for the '59 and newer heads are going to work.
