Just an FYI (and I do not post threads bit@ching about stuff)

I went to change oil on my OT Plymouth, 440 Chrysler which takes a Wix 51515.

DROVE the car to get the oil and filter.

6 quarts of oil in the pan and brand new filter, exact same filter.

ZERO oil pressure on fire up which runs 60 psi cold. Top end started ticking and I shut her down.

Pulled the NEW filter off and compared to the one that was on the car . . . .

rubber gasket was right tight . . . no flow whatsoever . . . (pointing to it in the pics below)

    I'm going to buy a G@D D@MN PH8A tomorrow . . . . I'm freaking HOT

Gauge read zero which baffled me at first. Hopefully no damage has been done on the bottom end.:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

I've understood WIX to be the gold standard . . . . . I'm going back to my Fram PH8A's

Ok. I don’t get what was wrong?
    What am I missing?
I have been using Wix instead of the orange filters for a few years now.

Did they start making good stuff again ?

the little holes around the perimeter of the filter are completely blocked by the gasket, there should be some "give" there, in this case there is NONE

no oil into the filter . . . no oil out and into the engine

No longer available? You mean Napa isn’t selling them anymore?

  17. I just spun a new Wix on the turquoise '63 in my avatar today. It's working fine. Sorry you had trouble MoePower, but it's one bad filter ...

  18. Fram was bought out by Walmart and now made in China,
I use Wix in all of my vehicles. No issues. It looks like a bad filter was made.

Wix was bought out by a German company recently IIRC. I think it's the same company that makes Bosch filters now.

NAPA used to be mostly Wix, all except for a few single source industrial filters. The new owner of Wix couldn't meet the volume NAPA required. Now they are doing like Motorcraft, buying by lot from different companies. I'm afraid it's buyer beware on oil filters until this all shakes out.

  23. PH8A is hard to beat .

I know that according to the masses it has been proven that Fram filters are crap .
How many people here have had any real world experience with engine issues because of a bad filter,,,,or sub standard filter ?
I’m sure that the top filters are better,,,,,,better media and better filtration.
I’m also certain that after a certain degree of filtration,,,,, it is simply overkill .

If you want to use the best filter,,,,great,,,,,more money,,,,,more filtration,,,,,more longevity .

But,,,,,,I’m giving real world facts here,,,,from personal experience.
I’m currently driving a 24 year old car everyday,,,,,,417,000 plus miles,,,,,no oil usage between changes,,,,,no engine issues or failures,,,runs quite as a church mouse .
I also have another car that has almost 400,000 miles,,,,,we drive it a couple times a week,,,,not a lot of miles per week,,,but it’s because it’s a backup car now,,,just in case .
    No issues,,,,,runs great,,,,not any noise either .
    I have a 30 year old truck,,,,,over 538,000 miles,,,,,no oil issues,,,,no problems,,,,,needs the valves adjusted though .

All of these vehicles share two things,,,,,Fram oil filters,,,,,and Valvoline oil !
No service problems,,,,no issues,,,,,lasted for more miles than I thought was possible,,,and still running great !

If you choose to run Wix filters,,,great,,,,,they are an excellent filter.
So are all the others most here list,,,I can’t remember all the brands .

But,,,one thing I have experienced,,,,is the herd mentality of blaming one thing as bad and the other much better .
    Just like the brands,,,,,Chevy is best,,,Ford bad,,,,or Ford is best,,,,Chevy bad,,,or Mopar bad .
Also,,,,,how you cannot buy any new flat tappet lifters or cams that won’t immediately fail,,,,so you better buy a high dollar roller !

If you want that,,,,,great,,,,,,I love rollers too,,,,,but I’ve never had an issue from flat tappets that wasn’t my fault !
I know there are cases where there are bad ones made,,,,,if one tenth of 1 percent were bad,,,that’s a lot of lifters !

I guess I’m a renegade,,,,,,,I don’t take anything from the internet as the truth .
Believe nothing you hear and only half of what you see !
Since AI is prevalent now,,,you can’t trust that much percentage,,,,,Lol !

    I like Mopar,,,and Chevy,,,and Ford,,,,other brands too .
I like several different oil brands,,,,Valvoline,,,Pennzoil,,,,even some store brands .
Filters,,,,,I like several brands,,,,but usually go Fram from a cost perspective .

Real world experience is what I go with,,,,,my billfold in my back pocket !

Just out of curiosity are you using a remote filter mount? I had an issue years ago with that same filter was used on a remote setup and the hoses were put on wrong so the oil flow was backwards. It was like that for years. Then Fram put that rubber check in and when I changed the oil there was no pressure. Had to correct the lines and everything was good.

Pressure is to the outside, and return is the middle, correct?

Bad deal and sadly seems to be right in line with the poor quality of many new parts anymore. Where I work, we source millions of parts to build construction equipment and parts that have been quality forever are starting to have issues as well. I might guess that this specific filter issue is related to an assembly issue of either lack of quality control or someone new doing a job. It is sad to me that even quality from domestic suppliers is suspect at times. We recently had some vacuum blowers that were all leaking at the input shaft. Come to find out that the tool for protecting the seal in installation from being damaged by the keyway in the shaft was actually damaged and cutting every seal after the pulled the sleeve off….
Anyway, this is why I like old parts whenever I can get them. I know oil filters can’t likely be sourced that are old, but the poor quality in general from lots of suppliers is discouraging.

Every new part is suspect these days. I just changed a radiator on my daughter's old Camry. The new radiator was not square-as in the whole thing was a parallelogram! Shipping box undamaged.

I was told by my parts guy that WIX was bought by MANN (german) and MANN is a very good brand so it looks to me like you got a bad one. I personally don't trust FRAM, I lost an engine on a less than 1 year old car when we lived in Germany after using a FRAM filter and the car manufacturer would not honor the warranty because I used it. Also had a friend lose oil pressure on first start up after an oil change using a FRAM filter.

  29. Thank you Tommy. I wholeheartedly agree. I wasn’t going to touch this because it’s a bunch of bullshit. Fram IS NOT owned by Walmart. It is owned by First Group Inc. First Group also owns Champ Labs, Raybestos brake parts, Centric brake parts, and Trico wipers. Guess who makes AC Delco filters? Champ Labs. So the same company who makes Fram, makes AC. Gee, I guess if GM trusts them, that’s enough for me.
