Got my car ready to go on a long run next weekend. Today I walk in my shop and my previously slow power steering leak turned into a leak that drained the reservoir over night! Local parts store ( I live rural, only one in town) said they can get a seal if I get them a seal number. Because of my location it usually adds a day or two to ship. So does anyone know what a ‘62 Mercury Meteor front PS pump seal number is? I’m sure it probably crosses over to Fairlane and others. Thanks.
BTW, I see rebuild kits on the net, but afraid shipping wouldn’t make it in time. If I can get the seal number, local store might be able to get it Monday.
I don't know one Ford power steering pump from another but Rock auto gives seal numbers for 62 Meteor power steering pump shafts.
National seal # 6835S Or SKF # 7465. Be careful installing the seal. The shaft is stepped and you either need a seal protector tool or wrap the stepped end of the shaft with packing tape to allow the seal to go over the step without damaging the seal lip.
Arg. Yeah, that was a typo I my part, meant to write 7465. Now to see if I can get one in time. Never tore a pump down before, so thanks for the tip!
Success! I think. My town parts store didn’t even have a listing on their computer for my pump, seal, or kit. That’s why I needed a number. Anyway they should have them in (I ordered 2, just in case) Monday, Tuesday at the latest. Thanks again guys. And I’ll try to remember to take pictures. Looks pretty straight forward. Guy at parts store said he usually drills a small hole in the old one, then screws a screw into it, then pries it out. Drives the new one in with an appropriate sized socket.
You wanted a few pics- The seal came in today. I tried drilling into it and screwing a screw in, and then prying it out. Didn’t work so well. For all I know this seal is 60+ years old, so it was stubborn. I ended up just grabbing some of the metal I pried up with a needle nose vise grip and it loosened up. If that didn’t work the next step was going to be collapsing it with a small chisel. Thanks for the heads up on the tape. I just wrapped some thick scotch type tape around it, worked good. I don’t know what protocol is on installing these, but I smeared a thin layer of anaerobic grease around the outside to help it slide in, and put some transmission ***embly lube on the tape and seal so the sealing surface stayed lubed.
In and out, yes, maybe 1/16”. I don’t know what end play is acceptable, if any. No lateral movement in the shaft though. I went out and checked it this morning before I left for work, and no leaks anywhere overnight.
