    @jimdillon,
    What do you know about the 'Slickwest' car?
    I never heard that one before. Of course, I knew Sam & Heidi and Midwest. Appears to be legitimate as the Liberty (or if your really old Lincoln) phone number was correct for the area. (no Area code either).
    Michigan cities beginning with 'Z':
    Zilwaukee, Zeeland & Zeba.
    None of which are near the Berkley, Royal Oak area that I'm familiar with.

    Bruce, I believe the car is the restored version of what the owner claims is the ex_Gianino 57. It may be the car and I remember when it was found and I saw some differences from the car as raced by Gianino and then by Dobrino out of Chicago after Sam sold the car. When the car was found I suggested he call Gianino who was living in Florida at the time-not sure if he did.

    Not sure why he put Slickwest-I am sure he has his reasoning. I would prefer Midwest and Ron Reader would have probably have had no objection. The car may have run 310 ci as these guys changed cubic inch to fit the rules but Sam ran 301 quite a bit if I remember correctly. The car as done is similar to what Sam ran in 1966 and early 67 with the hardtop and his name in the cove in that fashion. He ran with Midwest sponsorship in 66 and early 67 before switching to Standard Auto sponsorship for Indy in 67 and ran in MSP. Not sure his cubic inch in 66-it may have been 310 at some point. In 67 he removed the hardtop of course and it ran that way through 69 with Sam's ownership and 1970 with Dobrino.

    I have fond memories of the car. I remember us pitting right next to Sam at Detroit in 1968. He and his wife were really nice and friendly and I remember he ran really well on that day and told him so after every run. Great car that won at Indy in 67, 68 and 69 in three different classes (C/MSP, D/G, D/A).

    Thanx for the clarification, Jim.
    I bought a 301 engine from a neighbor that supposedly was built by Sam in '68 or so. Was burning oil pretty bad, so I tore it down over Christmas vacation while in college. All the top rings were broken, no-one had removed the ring ridge in any of the cylinders. I did that and reassembled it the night before classes were to resume and drove it from Royal Oak to Kalamazoo for it's maiden voyage!
    (I don't think Sam built the engine:()
