1962 Catalina Safari. Changing the rear springs. Is there a nut on the back of the top bolt I need to be holding or is it just threaded in to steel? I don’t want to just crank on it if I’m supposed to be supporting a nut up there.

If there is a nut, how do I access it? Seems like it should be under the front panel of the cargo area, but I don’t know how that panel is supposed to come up.

I have pictures but they are apparently too big to upload.

I did the dangerous part with the front already. Actually not too bad. Although this car is setup different than any I’ve ever done before. The lower ball joint is pointed down instead of up. That made the job sketchier.

update on the back. I got my bore scope in there. It’s a spinning nut for sure. There is no access from the top. It seems GM probably wanted you to loosen the body mounts and raise the car up.

In my case I think the solution is going to involve me making a small clearance in a sheet metal lip. Just enough for a wrench, and get it done.

Somebody also super redneck permanently installed the rear shocks with a welded bolt sometime in the 80s probably. Which, 62 Pontiac shocks are unobtanium. So I get it. But damn man don’t perma weld them in……badly
