Ford finally had a 4 speed in 1962 but 3 speeds had less resistance and even back then parasitic load was very important especially on long tracks. Just recently with the advent of the 5 speed shifting on circle tracks was unheard of with the exception of Pocano. Fireball must not have needed a smoke on the yellow flag laps as many did…I don’t see a cigar lighter.
