CRAGARS!

Got two new ones for the chevelle today 15x8’s. I’m Supposed to have one coming from amazon and another from some wheel dealer in Minnesota. turns out they’re hard to find right now. How long till they’re rusty?

Mine aren't rusty yet, 10 yrs of sitting....

Also sold another pair of 15x4's from 1976 (also have the matching 15x10's) that weren't great but the guy had them re-chromed and now they look great !

 

Man,,,,I always admired Mark,,,,,but to find he’s a Cragar man too !
All the wheels look great,,,,,,but there is just something about a beautiful set of Cragar’s that set a machine like that off !
Just beautiful !

And of course,,,,only Mark could find an NOS set,,,,lol .
It all goes back to having contacts in the know .

I know this sounds stupid but wax them.
If waxing seems like too much work use ceramic.
The problem is with Cragars and most of the chromed wheels the chrome plating sucks, they should have been done this way, steel that copper coating, then a nickel coating and Chrome and then Chrome again and then Chrome again for a 3rd time, the reason why they would use three layers of chrome is because the Chrome actually gets an oxidization layer and it pretty much will stop corrosion, it's why 1950s and 60s Cadillacs usually still have shiny bumpers even though the car is a wreck, The Wheels on the other hand are kind of like the bumpers on a 49 Plymouth, the cheapest chrome plating the factory could put on where it looked good.
Anyways back on subject use ceramic "wax" it's super easy to apply compared to traditional wax and it will last about 6 months of actual real weather.
This is the cheap waxI use on my daily driver I'm very happy with it for its longevity. I like taking care of my vehicles but I'm lazy and ceramic wax is so much easier to apply them real wax it just doesn't quite have to shine that are real carnauba wax would give you but for a brand new set of wheels it would be perfect since the shine is the Chrome not the wax.

 

If you’re of a certain age, nothing better than Cragars. I had a set on my Olds Cutlass 1977 to 1980. The coolest car in the high school parking lot.

 

Wow that looks great! I've always been told they can't be rechromed due to the aluminum center and steel rim.

Always liked them I had them on a 64 Impala SS and on a Kustom Ford ragtop back in the 60's

Yes taken apart and chromed then welded back together.
A crazy story is that the local guy I sold them to is doing a day two 69 camaro and is highly anal !
Before buying he was taking videos and photos, then sending them to the platers in California to make sure they could restore them to perfect condition, he called them 3 different times from my garage to absolutely make sure.
He gets them back and one has the tiniest discoloration blemish on the hoop so he sends it back, they find another 4 inch hoop that's not the same year (so he's mad about that) and they chrome that and weld the wheel back together free of charge.
He gets that one back and it's beautiful, but ....... he measures it and the backspace is 1/8 an inch off, he's beside himself about it !
Not sure if he sent it back but he called me up wanting to know if I had or knew of anyone with a matching year wheel or hoop.

 

Many times, they remove the original rim weld on new already plated. The centers a pretty much universal. They can be welded onto many different diameters, width and offset.

I know they made different centers and they are not all interchangeable.

 

These were on a '65 Malibu I bought. Had been on there for 20+ years. Held up very well,
especially in Denver weather.

 

always wondered what Mark's Chevelle looked like and I'm not disappointed..lol
had my Rally Nova almost 20 years now..built it the way I loved when I graduated HS in 1979..

 

I like the look of Cragars but between them being so dang heavy and the quickly rusting chrome I rarely ran them.
In the mid 80's I had a 70 chevelle with 4's and 8's



I have the reversed 8's on my 57 as rollers



I think the best idea they had was making the 610C full aluminum one piece, they offered a very limited size in it. I wouldn't mind a set of these but I don't own anything that takes 15x7 or 15x8 all the way around.

 

My uncle put them on his brand new 1965 'Cuda he bought the year he graduated HS. Still on the car when I inherited it. Original rims and hubcaps were in the Cragar boxes.

It’s been dry for a few days so they still look great

 

^^^^^ Not here,,,,,,Center Hill dam has had the flood gates open for a solid week now !
The reservoir behind it is still over capacity .
Normal depth is,,,300 feet ,,,right at the base !
