To me it's when I can't find the one I already bought because I put it somewhere that I'll always know where it is.

I catalog parts obsessively, so for me it’s mostly tools. I bought a half dozen tape measures and scattered them throughout the shop in the hope that I could find one when I actually need it.

  4. I get a tape every time Harbor Freight has them on sale or give them as an Inside Club bonus. I have a dozen or so and keep them all together on a shelf. I can usually always find one. The problem I have notices in the past couple months is I lose tools while using them. I'll use a phillips to tighten a windshield frame screw, get distracted to do some other task and set the screwdriver down. When I come back it is nowhere to be found. It really isn't funny, it's a real problem that slows down my work.

My mind is like a steel trap.
I needed a 4 pole Ford solenoid...I know I have a couple of them but, of course, forgot where I put them. Off to Autozone to buy another one...got half way there and realized I forgot to put on pants.

Buying a part is the best way to find the part you already had. It's like Christmas presents

I guess this is what's called the circle of life. If there wasn't guys doing all the things on this thread with parts and cars there wouldn't be much of a hobby left for us guys to enjoy.

    Glad it's not just me!
My ex would move stuff, and not tell me. I know, I know, there is a lock on the garage and spare room, but sometimes I'd set stuff down in the living room, and poof! gone. I'd know I had it, but all I got back was wide eyed innocence. I'd but a new one, and then the other one would mysteriously appear, usually where I'd trip over it. I'm dumb, but not senile ( yet).
Now the G/F does it. The really nice 25 ft. extension cord is gone. Got several 100 footers, but need the 25 foot for outside power tool stuff, fixing stuff she wants fixed.

From the time I got my Corvette in 1987 until I restored it in 2009, I collected parts for it. When I got down to finishing it, I found that I had not one, but three carpet sets for it. It turned out to be not so bad, because the upholsterer made a mistake and ruined the first set. In order to keep the job going, I was able to sell him the second set at full retail. And I essentially I have a set waiting in the wings.

It has happened. Not gonna lie.

I was able to somehow track down a new Fel-Pro trans pan gasket locally for a Olds Jetaway only to be looking for something else on a shelf several months later and found 3 of them brand new in the package.

I felt like a total maroon.

  14. Not only have I forgotten about part I had, but since I also do a lot of wheeling and dealing forgotten I sold parts!

However, I never make a deal on something until I am sure I have it!

I do the same thing with HF tape measures. I figure that if I leave one everywhere I go. it'll increase the chances of finding one when I really need it.

Let’s face it we deal with thousands of parts for each car. We’re bound to screw up every now and then. Just look at all the plug wires Moriarty has. :D

That row of transmissions is familiar. I’m currently working on freshening an S-10 T5 for my Dad, and went over to the shelves where I knew I had another trans. I was surprised to find three of them there. But wait, there’s even more on the shelf below that! I think I’m set for a while.

WE'RE not alone,as all those notes show.
If I ever had enough $ to do my own stuff,in a timely way, rebuying the same part 2 times, or even more, would be less likely to happen. Just often to much time goes by,or even "I'll put this away in a safe place ! < Too safe,maybe...o_O;)

Dang, if closer I’d buy one just to look at, then maybe a few more for parts, and then a couple more to sell, add a few extra in just in case I needed something I was missing, and wind up with a working radio.
    Ooops, maybe not;)

How many of you have bought a part at a swap meet because you might need it, although you're pretty sure you've got one at home, and while talking to the seller you realise they're selling off stuff they doubled up on?

I have an issue with stuff that I think are “important”. I then say to myself I need to find a “safe place”. Needless to say, about 50% or more of the time, I can never remember where that “safe place” was/is. As a bit of an aside, I loaned my Makita cordless blower, batteries, and charger to my daughter a few months ago. Told her I needed them back because I needed the batteries to use in my Makita cordless mower. Get the batteries back, and notice they are only 3.0Ahr, and I have two 5.0Ahr. So, start wondering where the other two 5.0Ahr batteries are. Can’t find them anywhere. Go out and check the mower. Yep, open the cover and there they are. Sat there outside all winter. D’oh!
