I'm attempting to scab together a throttle body fuel injection for a flathead. Unfortunately the controller I have has no provision to run an IAC valve, and of course there is no choke. Is there a way to make a system or operate a Ford or GM valve without a controller?
Most of the iac's I have seen used a pulse width modulated voltage, I am sure there is a black box somewhere that can be adapted. Most throttle bodies have a mechanical throttle blade screw on them to set base idle. Could probably get away without using an iac if you wanted.
If you just wanted one for start ups, you can run it with a toggle switch and 12 volts. You can regulate the airflow by cutting a base gasket with progressively smaller holes until you reach the desired rpm. Once the engine warms up, you shut off the toggle switch. I only use Ford's iac from the 90's so I don't know if this will work on anything else.
Can you tune the ECU with a laptop? I would add a little rpm and play with the fueling at startup and before it gets to operating temp to make up for the lack of an IAC and choke. I'm building a blown setup that won't allow for an IAC and that's the plan for it.
Doesn't Holley make a 1 barrel EFI that would work on a flathead? If you are trying to go with efi, you need the controller working with the IAT to make it run correctly. Can't expect it to idle properly if its not getting that information and processing it. Do it right or you will probably have problems and blame the EFI....
