    Hello,

With the local secondary schools already getting out for summer, it is one of the earliest vacations that we remember in our times of school attendance over the family generations. Colleges all get out at early times and varying days, depending on locations across the USA. But, normally elementary schools through high schools normally get out in the second week of June. What gives?

Well, then, to start off So Cal coastal shark warnings were up on Memorial Day and now, it is clear to get back in the water… so to speak. Clear for the focus of the underwater torpedo coming your way… oh no!!!

My brother was starting to get involved in the surf scene and he already had some ideas of what a surf panel van or camper would look like if we built one first. But, as those days were only for summer, our drag race build took on the full time build aspects.
    upload_2024-5-31_5-31-49.png
Our small speed shop listed in So Cal dealer circles… was going to supplement our race car activities…

Thinking back to the 1960 timeline, we were busy finishing the 671 SBC installation in the 40 Willys Coupe and our thoughts were being squashed with a timeline of sorts. We wanted to “Get our Motor Running…” to be competitive before we even attempted to do a cross country road trip to the 60 Nationals in Detroit.

But, in the early stages of full power runs, it was all advancing as we planned. The sound was lively and the power in acceleration was doing a number on our competition in C/Gas. We had made enough changes to be completely competitive in one of the most powerful classes at Lion’s Dragstrip. the next class was waiting for us to lighten our added traction support, but only if we were one of the top racers in this C/Gas class.

So, during the week and ever since December of 1959, when we started the original build, we had jumped ahead to what was gong to tow the Willys Coupe to the drags at Lion’s Dragstrip and other So Cal locations. The Impala already had a solid tow hitch welded in and served its initial time towing to various places. The Impala would do for now, as it was a reliable workhorse, but it really was not a tow car or long distance traveler if we decided to go outside of So Cal.

So, jumping up several years beyond our starting point, my brother was already talking about a color coordination of a panel van and our “yellow” color 40 Willys… We can all dream in color… ha! So those ideas were always tossed around like pancakes. Sometimes it was all silver in the station wagon or panel truck and the Willys Coupe, other times the yellow took precedence.

It was a teenage project with what we planned and it was the most intense fun we had at the time. The reward was a very powerful 671 SBC motor that rumbled to life and drew the attention of all in the pits as we chugged to the staging area. Not many 671 SBC motors were in any competitive street legal builds at the time… We took a chance and had plenty of satisfying moments in the build and planning the future. YRMV

I have always been impressed, by the highly detailed model cars that,
@Ron Funkhouser shows us on the (FAS), he has a million of them!
So a little something different this week.
Some of the stuff in my front window, and a great Tom Johnson illustration, of a phantom view, of a very cool "MASERATI" race car, and the cool vintage styling, of a 47 Chrysler tail light housing, I scored at the recent Monroe
    swap-meet for $10.00.

If any of you are interested, in what the 47 Chrysler tail light will be incorporated into, take a look at the thread I posted on the antiquated, title,
    "FORD COE HEADLIGHT UPDATE"

You all have a great weekend.
    Thanks from Dennis.

With just those two starbursts above the car I was immediately thinking of a Christmas card. Perhaps you could add Santa and some packages later in the year!

I clearly indicated that the illustration is by TOM JOHNSON.

1909 Stanley Steamer (detail). Horn end- brass- steam powered horn, of course. Certainly grabs attention on the street when this horn hisses like an old steam train. These old steamers have plenty of torque and held the land speed record in 1912 at 122 mph. This big 1909 tourer is not a lot slower, or so it feels, riding in it. Fast car- SLOW brakes.
Pic is from Sporting Car Club of South Australia's recent 90th anniversary OLD CROCK'S RUN picnic re-enactment.

  25. Thanks @mohr hp
That was just something I had stuck in my head. I wanted to create a ‘50/60’s style custom. It takes inspiration from Mercury’s, the Futura show car, ‘Vettes and more.

WOW 122 mph in 1912? Only took the hot rodders 25 years to catch up!
