Projects Back in a Banger

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Outback, Jan 6, 2018.

  1. I am sure you know this but it is good to point it out. Frequently when a hub is run loose a crack will start in the axle. In time this crack will migrate through the axle causing it to fail. When the axle fails the wheel/hub/axle will depart from the car. I ***ume you are running safety hubs or brake clips as these a a good idea anyway.

Thanks Charlie, I will have a good look at the hub/axle. it was tight when ***embled, but the shim was only aluminum, (all that was available at 11pm) I didn't fully understand tapers at the time, the car would have been lucky to have traveled 80miles since I have owned it. (& It was a project long before that) I'm hoping the axle is ok & it was just a miss matched drum...

I've taken the RPU out for a rattle a couple of times recently, last weekend to the local historic race meet & this weekend just up the road to visit a couple of mates who are playing with Bangers too, it was good to go for a wander on some dirt roads,

I still have much to do, the timing needs adjustment, the springs need softening & fitting shocks, some wiring work & that's before I can dial in the aesthetics, like larger rear tires (probably 6.50/18's) & a chopped screen, but much like all of us in life, we keep learning, hopefully getting better at doing life with others, so this lil Hit Rod will get better too.
I have limited time & have become settled with the idea it will slowly improve, while we get to enjoy it. IMG_20240601_132257678_HDR~2.jpg IMG_20240601_124332297_HDR.jpg IMG_20240601_123705646_HDR.jpg IMG_20240601_121050190.jpg
These were at the Historics, I didn't take many pics but these caught my eye IMG_20240525_161924276.jpg

My Dad & Sister were visiting the other day, I took them both for a rattle around the block, my little girl raced out for a ride too, "the noisier the better she says" Resized_6E8CC782-_1719708486350.jpeg

  5. I'll admit I'm slightly jealous.

My son and I bought an A ch***is that I fully intended on putting a roadster pickup body on. However, fate intervened, and I got a job at Greenfield Village in Dearborn, MI where there is a 29 A roadster pickup in the fleet. I learned, I'm a bit on the 'large' side to fit into that body style. Well, really, almost all body styles, but that one particularly.

I am subscribing to follow along vicariously so I can see someone enjoy what I can't. ;)

    v/r,

We've had a fair bit going on, young family, house extension broken cars, while the lil pickup has been neglected, it hasn't been forgotten,
Just a quick pic of its new high heels. I'll squirt the front wheels to match the back in good time.
    Thanks for the interest. IMG_20250612_075916.jpg

What are those angled tubes above the blower in the yellow car?

What make is the sports car or is it a one-off?

The body of this was originally a LHD & Ch***is RHD, some could say it's confused, I say it's been redeemed, given a new life

@Outback Are those rears the 6.50-18's you mentioned above?
    That's a great ride!

Thanks @jet996 they are 7.00/18, they are a big tyre, the front's are a 4.50/4.75-17 on a skinny English Y model rim.
A 5.00 or 5.50/17 might balance it out a bit better? Will see how it goes

Glenn, how do you find the 700-18’s on 32 rims?

I’m thinking of running them on my coupe, with 3.7 rear gears

It went on ok & seems to fit well, I fitted the tyre, haven't done any miles yet though.

It's been a while & still not much happening here, but after looking at this ole thing I convinced my self the front wheels were just to light & little, I bought a full size Ford 17" wheel to put the tyres on but discovered the one I had to make the pair was toast, at a friend's suggestion I threw the original 6.00/16's on & I think they balance the rears much better, I'll flip the tyres & paint the rims black to finish the look.
Still need to get to the other issues, Spring is nearly here so the good driving days are on their way IMG_20250827_174354.jpg IMG_20250827_174417.jpg

    Happy New Year,

Life has been happening a bit this year with very little hot rodding going on here in Bangerville,
I still haven't painted the front wheels but I have flushed the radiator with Citric Acid & it seems to have cleared up my over heating issue, it did cause - unblock? - a couple of leaks but some period sealer seems to have done the trick.

We had family around & friends visiting over our Christmas break so was able to give about a dozen folk their first ride in a vintage car/hot rod, there were lots of smiles which was an awesome gift for all of us.

It's good driving weather - mostly - so I have been bombing around as often as I can. There is still a long list of things to tidy up but I'll tackle them one at a time.

The last photo is me tooling around with a war ration roadster quarter turned pickup. One-day I'll build a roadster

    Thanks for checking in

We went to a local cruise night with a couple of mates in their banger model A's. The first real run with other cars. I was happy with how it ran. We got wet & I gave a few kids & a couple of friends some laps.
    A good night IMG_20260117_173800_HDR.jpg IMG_20260117_224625.jpg IMG_20260117_205426_HDR.jpg

Great, I'm a little envious. The snow has melted here, but it's supposed to stay below freezing.
However, I can continue working on my 4Banger.
I hope it will be running in the spring. Have fun and enjoy!
    Regards, Harald

    motovation....with envy
I took my Vicky to breakfast yesterday morning and ran to town with another banger buddy....
my first comment to him was 'we must not like our model a's'.....we were running them in the salt and cinders liberly spread from the last snow....I froze my fingers the 14 miles to town

I hope I build my 4BANGER well enough to drive it all year round.
I've never owned or driven a car like this before, but I'm really looking forward to it.
    Regards, Harald
