Event Coverage Official 2024 MSRA Back To The 50's Weekend June 21, 22, 23 50th Anniversary

Well folks, it's once again that time of year! As June approaches it's time to make plans to head to Minnesota for the 50th ANNUAL MSRA BACK TO THE 50’S WEEKEND. The fun begins Thursday as thousands of cars arrive from around the nation and head to registration pick-up; that evening there will be numerous car cruise-ins throughout the twin cities. Friday morning comes early as the gates open and thousands of hot rods descend upon on the MN State Fairgrounds.

This is the largest car show in the world for vehicles 1964 and older. Typically the car count approached 12,000 hot rods....yes, you read that right. If you have not attended, you should really make plans. Once you attend...you'll never miss another. This year is a little extra special as it's the 50th Anniversary.

The beautiful MN State Fairgrounds is the perfect venue for an even this size. It really is a mini city with tree lined streets, plenty of shade, vendor buildings, food vendors, a sky ride, and much more.

There is a lot to see and do at Back To The 50's. This includes live music, WWII aircraft flyovers, 400 swap spaces in the swap meet, 300 commercial vendors, model car contest, and continuous cruising throughout the fairgrounds. Many premiere hot rod builders attend and bring their builds. If you're bringing your family (as you should since this is a family friendly car show) and they want to get away for a while, there is a shuttle that will bring them to and from the Mall of America.

I’ll be there!

 

My father and I will be going together for the first time in our 32 coupes. Looking forward to sharing a great weekend with my father and fellow hot rodders!

 

I will be there with my 49 Buick and 56 T Bird.

 

I think this year will be about number 40 for me.

 

We are several weeks out from the show. Is there a plan for a HAMB member meet and greet?

 

I said to my good TX buddy @hot-rod-1958 that we planned to do LARS and BTTF . He said “ do you mind if we tag along” Then it snow balled. Mark has put a huge effort in to the “Texas hot rod tour” organised venues , shops to visit and accommodation for an 18 car caravan . We fly from LARS to Tulsa to catch the first night of the “Texas hot rod tour” For us kiwis it’s going to be epic 5 days on the road in a hot rod , then our 3rd visit to BTTF from down under.

 

I'll be there! My favorite show, I think my first BTT50's was '87 when I was 6yo

I've had my '57 IH and '59 Rambler there a few times.
This year I'm bringing a real oddball... I bet I'll have the only one at the show.

Possibly a low turnout of HAMB folk at the meet and greet.. I think when we last went to BTTF there was no HAMB meet and greet. Times before it was a small turn out of HAMB members, but it was still cool. Especially for those of us on the opposite side of the planet.

 

See you there, or should I say "sea" you there. It will be a sea of cars and people.

 

FYI if you are coming in from the east on 36, MnDOT announced westbound 36 will be closing between 61 and 35E from 9 Friday night until Monday morning.

Getting ready for the 50's

 

Texas hot rod tour is sneaking closer. In Des Moines tonight. Swing by Clear Lake tomorrow on our way to Saint Paul. @titus was kind enough to invite our group for a visit to his collection , which we plan to do. Will be cool to meet up.

 

Drove by the fairgrounds and the campground was about 1/3 full. Saw a few cool cars driving around St Paul.

 

We are leaving early tomorrow will be parking on east side of Underwood all day Friday and Saturday I will have the 55 thunderbird blue T-Bird ….black top…Stop by and say Howdy!

 

Surprised no one has mentioned the forecast yet. Close to 90% rain & thunderstorms Friday & Saturday. Both my brothers and I have had this event planned for 2 years and decided to pull the plug and stay home. Lots of $ and chance of inclement weather hitting vehicles, no thanks. Maybe we are just a bunch of pussy’s these days!

 

Des Moines show is so much more enjoyable...to me anyway,...smaller crowd, easy getting around in the city, etc.

 

The weather forecast for Friday looks like a wash out. With 1 1/2” of rain possible. But Saturday the rain is supposed to be between midnight and 6AM. So should be a good day. Sunny Sunday.

The 50th Annual MSRA Back To The 50's Weekend was a lot of fun. There were well over 10,000 registered cars all 1964 and older. Another great year with great people and cars. Here's some of the photos I took.
