Looking for a sign painter in southeastern Massachusetts or close. Need vintage racing work done. Would like to avoid vinyl. Thanks

I am told this rig took many thousands of dollars to hand letter.
It once hauled the 917Ks and later the AMC cup cars.. I cringed when I heard the total resto cost but there is only one!
Wish I has a better side shot.

I finger paint. I won't charge you for the crappy work but my Mom loves it and hangs my "art" on the fridge.

Used to be every town had a Sign Writer or 2 (I used to be one). Ever since vinyl became readily available, "one-stroke" ...well, it sort of became a dying art.
Talk to the local stock car guys...they may know of one still around.

Here's one I did years ago for Geoff Bodine when he was still a "local guy"...before he went big time NASCAR.

Hit up Hotrod Jen. She’s east coast(as far as I recall), does great work, and travels as well.

    Hello,

When we first started to do custom motor work and start our speed shop business, we had thoughts of what our advertising would be. Back when we were building our 671 SBC motor in our 40 Willys Coupe, we had only painted the coupe a red primer color, with the hopes of just before the final mag wheels, new slicks arrived, we would get it painted and lettered.

A possible future look for our 671 SBC Willys Coupe finished build in 1960, prepped and ready for the U.S. Nationals in Detroit.

Yellow: my brother's choice... Silver: my choice. We drew out what we thought was going to be our logo on the doors.

So, we sketched out the 5 ring color design on the side door panel. Our local Olympic Auto Parts Shop down the street was going to be our partial sponsor and so, it was prominent in the design. The painter’s shop farther down into the industrial area was going to do the art work. We tried to do the art, but it looked awful.

By the time our Photographic Works business started to gain speed, we looked into putting some advertising on the side of our 327 powered Ford Sedan Delivery.
upload_2024-6-8_2-22-47.png The sedan delivery had plenty of space for a nice design.
We contacted some hot rod shops for their ideas and decided to talk to the local lettering folks that had done some custom art work on cars and trucks. Then, we went to a sign shop to see what they offered.
    upload_2024-6-8_2-24-1.png
The shop could do a magnetic sign that we could pop on and off. But, for tax purposes, it had to be painted on the said hot rod. So, that led to some custom hot rod shops that had great painters and pinstriping guys for any job. The cost was too high for a good return, so, we left off the advertising sign on the side of the door or our other great location for a larger sign, on the large panel of both sides of the rear cave.
upload_2024-6-8_2-24-38.png A nice door design was a choice, simple and not too costly.
The simple version of just lettering on the large side rear panel was going to be the final answer, in gold leaf. The sign shop could do it easily.
upload_2024-6-8_2-27-26.png So, it does not have to be a hot rod builder or custom art guy, the local sign shops have folks that have skills to do custom lettering and it should be able to get the message across.

If you are stuck, the local sign shop in every city has access to a list of painters. But the local hot rod shop has guys that have done custom car painting and lettering as their vocations… so that is the direction one would take. If you are too far away from any hot rod paint shop, then the sign shop could be your resource. YRMV

I went to a local company that does vinyl lettering, and wraps, and asked if they could help me with a "stencil" so I could do my own lettering? They were great and knew exactly what I needed, and made up stencils that were self adhesive I could place wherever I wanted. The sales rep even took pictures of my car and sent me a mockup of how the stencils would look once painted, and I was able to suggest changes in size, color, or whatever before they cut them all out. Cost me less than $200 for all of mine, and took me about 6-7 hours to paint them in.

They included a 2nd set of stencils to do the black borders on those areas I wanted outlined.

  17. If you need actual hand painting
for a sign or a vehicle in California
our very own Jim Holguin @ https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/members/sanford-son.21084/

is the man for the job.

He is a native of Visalia and
    still lives there.

He does vehicle lettering - signs
and also hand paints old suitcases
if you need a special gift for
    someone or yourself.

I have had him do at least
three as gifts for good friends.

When I had McPeak in Riverside, CA letter the doors on my p/u I gave him a general idea of what I wanted and he took it from there. Said he really liked doing the more artistic work since most of what he was doing now was generic lettering on contractor and construction trucks and the like. Later I took him the side by side I use in the orchard to have a logo and lettering painted. When I picked it up he said he really had to stop himself from pin striping it while he was at it. A true old time letterer/sign painter/pin striper/artist/craftsman. His shop is still there but not sure if he's still at it.
