    Go to www.landspeed.com/magneticasb.asp

The North American Eagle land speed car(jet) is using magnetic brakes. How the hell do these work?

I got the story from GG Gazette September 2006 issue page 14.

Can someone 'splain this to poor okie?

i have no idea but i want to venture a guess

#1...using magnets as the actuating mechinism and using a normal type brake for the physical stopping power

or #2 ...using opposing magnets on opposite sides of the rotor and another rotor type thing fixed to the car with electro magnets...so it tries to attract the magnets each time they p*** by each other?

sounds like a good idea if they can do it without a physical connection and therefore not have any heat buildup

I think you're on to something in choice #2 Zach, cause I remember in the article it said that the heat generated was only 300 degrees. There couldn't be any contact at that low of temp.

Probably works like an electric motor with the armature wired so you can run it backwards.
If so, it will probably work as a "reverse" gear too.

then where does the engergy go?

normal brakes work by turning kinetic engergy (m*** times velocity) into thermal engergy (heat)

they are filming a do***entary on the team building the car. i saw the first part up here on the discovery channel, which covered the build and some initial testing. I havent seen anything on them making a run at the record yet. It is a neat group of american and canadian engineers, kinda doing it on their own. It is very "gr***roots" compared to the british team that currently holds the record. the part i saw had some details on the braking system, but im no engineer so what they explained sounded like greek to me.

That's how and why electric/magnetic motors get hot.

on mag brakes, it should be used in a regenerative system like they use in hybrids, capture the spent energy and use it again when it's needed.

Exact same way that all regenerative hybrids work. the kenetic energy is converterd to heat and electrical energy/ Ultrasimplified : they act as generators. the more electrical load you put on a generator, the harder it is to turn, and the more energy is absorbs.

Larry its just like the brakes on my trailer, electro magnets work with electricity, the more juice you give them the better the magnet holds, thus a magnet next to the brake rotor with enough juice will stop just about anything

One of the guys, I think the owner, works at Boeing and they did a nice write up in the employee on line newspaper on him and his quest a few months back.

Thanks Mark. I didn't know this technology was already mainstream...I live under a rock at times...

According to Lev X, the brake manufacturer, these are not electromagnetic.

could you imagine an electromagnetic clutch...that'd be a neck-snapping hard launch...stuff like this has always intrigued me, and chances are it comes from VERY old designs from the 40's and 50's that have long since been forgotten in the file cabinets at the patent office...

    Magnetic Brakes are old school.
