I need to know if this s-10 is the short or long bed from the picture attatched. It is only $150 and I am wanting to do the s-10 conversion to my 53 gmc. I can't tell if this is the standard wheelbase, or the extended. any help is appreciated.
Measure it. Looks like a regular box to me. The wheelbase you want is 118. That looks to be a 108 inch. Pat.
I just got a text from my buddy who tows and he just brought in a 4X4 Blazer that I can probably get for a song, something to the tune of maybe $200. would this be dumb to get for my donor for my 49 chevy truck? I know 4X4 isn't the most desireable but is it inhibitive to use the 4x4 drivetrain? comments?
An S10 Blazer has like a 100" wheelbase. Truck looks like a decent beater for $150, I see guys up here trying to get $600-$800 for trucks with all kinds of rot holes in them -
thanks guys, I guess I will pass on it for now then. Keep your eyes open for something close for me if you don't mind Earl.
if you guys come across a truck cheap enough, snag it, I've talked to a few guys that have done these swaps and they say lengthening them is easy, I think 3" box tube slides right inside the frame rails and works as a perfect "slider" to adjust frame length til you get it right. I'm working on collecting parts for mine as we speak
Surfer, you wanna come down to south jersey and help me with mine. I could use an experienced hand when it comes to this. beer and food is on me.
$150? Tell me more? What's it got in it? How's it run? Trans/motor? I'm doing a 54 Chevy right now using an X cab. Cutting this frame is nothing and setting the wheelbase is easy. I'm hoping to weld it back together by Monday. The weather here in Michigan is crap right now. I paid $150 for the rolling frame with no motor/trans/fuel tank. All you need is about a 5" C channel about a 4 feet long. Cut it in half and use half on each side to lengthen the frame to the size you need. You'll also need a wider rear end, the 4x4 is a bolt in but I'm using an El Camino rear. The spring perches were $8 for a pair ordered from my local Dodge dealership. If that thing is reliable enough to drive 500 miles, I'll come and get it for that price! Check mongosgarage.com for wheel base specs on all S10s.
The S-10 has a two piece frame. The front half over laps the back half. If you look under the cab you can see the joint. Classic Trucks mag has an article on htis subject. If I remember correctly you would want to start with an extended cab and shorten the frame at the factory joint. I just went out (in the dark and cold no less, 49 is cold to me) and measured my 99 extended cab and it came in at 120" and my 82 regular cab short bed had a 108" wheelbase.
Should be 122, 118, and 108 from what I recall (X cab/Standard/Short). Blazer says 100" on a couple of sites. There is a write up I've seen recently that points out that at the joint Lon refers to (which is where I split my S10 xcab) the 4x4 and 4x2s are different. The frames are a different thickness so you can't just take the front half of a 4x2 and put it together with a 4x4 or vice versa. I don't have any experience here, just passing on what I've heard. The joint above took about 10 minutes of careful grinding with a cut off wheel to get the front and rear apart. I just put jack stands under it and rolled it apart when I was done. I cleaned it up, cut 5 1/2" out and am sitting at a little longer than stock. I plan to weld it at 92" from the grease zirks on top of the front spindles to the center of the leading rear leaf spring bolt. RDSTR31 did a 55 Series 1 with a short bed by just adding a length of frame in the middle. He said he didn't pay attention to the frame splice until after he'd cut and welded it longer.
$150, you better buy that before I find out where it is. Runner or not. That is a HUGE, count that HUGE steal even if the motor is toast. Who cares if it doesn't work for your project. Snag it, and flip it to pay for your project. If you're still passing, will you shoot me the info in a PM. I can afford to go to TN for that.
hell i added something like 30 inches or so to fit mine S10 frame under my 1 ton bus. u can cut them up & add or subtract any amount of frame u want....joe
Now see what you've gone and done. We're salivating like Pavlov's dog and really NEED that truck in our yards. You'd better get it before you have a HAMB sleepover at your house!
It actually looks like a clean little truck. Why cut it up? Stick a V8 in it and use it as a driver/shop truck. Find a rusty/wrecked one to cut up.
I have a shop truck already. 1 ton dually x cab with a 454. In Michigan, all S10s are rusty or wrecked!
