How about an OT thread on factory race cars? Here is two from tonight's cruise in Portland, OR.
Boss 429. 18000 miles. What a sight to see driving in. A museum piece.

Wish I had a pic, but as a teen, dad's friend took us for a ride in his '69 Z28 that he bought new. Designed for the Trans Am race, that little 302 screamed, leaving me with an impression that's lasted for life. It looked like this one.

  3. Those 302’s were a killer little motor…don’t see too many of those today

  4. A guy on the next street over had one.
As an 11 year old I thought… 302 that’s nothin’. I soon learned that the car was pretty bad ass. I was not a Chevy guy growing up but I’ll always remember that car going through the gears down Chillum rd.

  5. Threads like this make me aware of how few pics were taken when I was young. Partially because of the cost of developing film and the remainder being lack of foresight. :) I don't remember being around anybody who took pics. I had a few with a polaroid but age has taken it's toll on them.

  6. How true, I don’t even have pics of my own cars. The World of Wheels pics I took with a Kodak instamatic were laughable.

The Boss is missing the smog equipment and has the incorrect distributor. Nice car though.

Yep, my high school friend bought one new in 1968, used to street race together. Real deal polished magnesium
Halibrands on it. Ran it into the ground, bought it back 20yrs later, did a complete resto and sold it again. Very
cool cars and motors. Led me into doing cloned Z28 302"s

It may not look like a terror, but this is a documented "double COPO" non Yenko, Camaro. Very rare. Other than a cowl hood induction, it looks like a grocery getter. Factory ordered race car.

He was winding it up to 8k and pulling gears on the chrome shifter handle, not a Hurst but Muncie was stamped on the handle. Some cars had chambered exhaust pipes, they must have wailed.

  13. Yes I know that there is another thread on this car but you can’t talk factory terror with out mentioning this one.
Hemi Dart, a true factory single purpose beast. Not really a street car. Even if you were a pro they were hard to come by but they were a terror.

  14. The AC Cobra MKIII should positively be on the list. I would even settle for a kit car with the right motor.

^^^^Agreed! I have never ridden or drove one but I have rode in a Pantera. There was one at the cruise in last night. One of the fastest things I have experienced. Yes, it's Italian but powered by Ford's 351 Cleveland so I think it fits the mold.

Back in the 60s, if you were at the "right" dealership and had the "right" salesman, and you had the required funding (usually paid in full when ordered), you could buy some pretty hot cars from the factory. Sometimes the timing of a persons purchase played a role in what went down.

Sometimes the very best stuff was reserved for the racers with proven on track records, but there were times when cold hard cash talked. For the car company sponsored "hot rods" to qualify for some racing classes, the car companies had to release a certain number of them loose to the "general" public.

Not many of those factory race cars survived unchanged over the years. I don't believe the factories intended any of the cars to survive more then a few years. The few that did make it are pretty valuable.

I met a man in 2005 from Phoenix that had 6 of them, not sure of the colors. Denny Aldridge had more than one 20 years ago.

I was in Denny's shop when I was a kid, he had a Boss 429 with like 5000 miles on it if I recall. He was building a red one for one of the Jailblazers. There was a white one and that grey one I started the thread on. For a kid on a Schwinn 10 gear, It was a lot to take in.

There were no factory 1970 black Boss 429’s. Mine was originally Grabber Orange. Raven black was available for 1969 Boss 429’s, so the one you saw at the car show could be correct.
